Comment:

Hmmmmm...let's see now: Faith No More...Bjork...Spinal Tap...Van Morrison...Wen-dy Carlos...W.A.S.P....Captain Beefheart...Megadeth...Yup! We're deep in the heart of Pazuzu country, alright!! :)

Well, as far as this particular mix is concerned, I honestly had no real masterplan or agen-da. I just had a whole bunch of separate sequences of songs which for one reason or another I thought would be amusing, clever, and/or (in some cases) mildly sick! Listening to the whole thing played back on my CD Walkman after the fact, I'm actually rather surprised that it holds together as well as it does!

This Lullaby / Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands - Take the o-pening and closing numbers, for example. When putting this together in my head, it never occurred to me that both tracks were in a lilting 3/4 waltz time - which sort of makes them perfect booken-ds! :) And I had actually used this Dylan song before, or rather the cover version by Steve Howe and Jon Anderson from Yes, but just not Dylan's original until now!

Optimistic < Eternal Optimist - No real connection here, actually. In fact, the title of the Radiohead song seems meant to be ironic, and the Hanoi song's sentiments are more literally optimistic!

Sunshine / Cold Piece - It just so happens that I decided to use this particular Alice In Chains song and this particular solo Jerry Cantrell song, but then I heard the refrain from the Cantrell song, "In your sunshine / Where's your sunshine now?" Ha, ha! So it's perfect, it fits, and I'm happy! :)

Die, Die My Darling / Attitude - A pair of Misfits covers. (Sadly, I actually don't have anything from Glenn Danzig pre-'88...)

Mommy - An outtake from BOC's Secret Treaties from '74, and it's an absolute gutbuster! From the pen of Rich-ard Meltzer, this would seem to be about some sadsack misogynist who idly fantasizes about kil-ling his mother, wife and daughter! "My wife is a hippo / She's as big as a house / I'd like to feed her / a poisonous mouse!" Kind of a punky Doors-meets-Dictators number, it was left on the cutting room floor because apparently it went a little too far for the band members!

Wart Hog < Piggies - No explanation required here, I think! [*wink*]

Broadsword < Stonehenge - This is me being a smartass, basically. (Or as the English would say, taking the piss!) But in a very respectful way, I hasten to add...!

Ladytron - It may border on heresy to say so, but I actually like the sound of Thom Yorke imitating Bryan Ferry better than I like the real Bryan Ferry! ("Guards! Seize him!" [*turns and runs away*])

107 Steps < Magic And Loss - The Summation - I personally don't know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall, but now I'm pretty sure how many steps it takes to "pass through the fire to the light"! :)

Oh, by the way...yet another elimination:
The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) (#161 - 4/16/09)
