Comment:

How do you do a jazz sampler on a single CD for someone who's open minded about music but not (yet) into jazz?I don't know. The basic remit was to produce "a horn-dominant and fairly challenging compilation." Well, I didn't necessarily go along with the former all the way but I tried for the latter. I was toying with doing a series of themed CDs (and was interested in what Geoffrey Balasoglou has done recently). I may yet do a series but realised that for this mix it needed to be a less daunting (to the curious listener) single CD. I then ended up with a CD that was so detrimentally 'challenging' as to be unlistenable. So, I chose to favour my own tastes (and, obviously, this is within the limitation of my collection) whilst also avoiding some of the more obvious picks, to up the curiosity factor. There are still doubts lurking in my head about the current mix, such as, [1] Would the Kronos pick be as fascinating to someone who didn't know the Monk original as to someone who did ? [2] How can you justify the inclusion of [a] the 'not really jazz' Piazzolla pick, [b] two representations of some artists, when so many others aren't there at all ? [3] Why include the relatively unknown 'Lotus Blossom' over all the other possible Ellingtonia, especially when it's a remit-breaking piano-based work ?Well the answer to [3] at least is because it's beautiful, this is Duke's elegy to Billy Strayhorn (who wrote it), it was recorded just after Billy's death and it tears your heart out. This mix was done for a friend called Enda who has been waiting a few months for this as I vacillated about content and format, hence the title. On another day this mix could have had a completely different selection :)

I understand your dilemma - there's so much great music to share, where to start? I'd like to think I would restrain myself to include artists only once, but I'm sure I'd be influenced by whatever I'm listening to on any particular day. Anyone w/the potential to dig jazz would get turned on by this mix. Good to see Dex represented, but I'd also include Miles on any intro to jazz; it's like leaving The Beatles off an intro to rock!

I know Scott, missing Miles out was perversely on purpose - everyone always recommends Kind Of Blue as _the_ album to give someone as an intro to jazz.

Dilemna schmilemna. Mingus is the cheif diety of my jazz universe and I've noticed from experience that non-jazzophiles seem to respond more readily to him than anyone else. I think you can get away with not including Miles. He's overrated like Shakespeare, which means he's one of the 3-5 greatest jazz musicians ever but way too overexposed. If your friend wants to get into him, she should have no problem hearing some of his good stuff. I think this is a fine intro sampler.

well, it looks fine to me introduction to jazz...and the as for the lurking doubts, i doubt edna will notice seeing she's not into jazz...yet. i'd say this CD could change that.

Thanks for your comments - I must clear up one thing though - the person it's for is called Enda, that isn't a typo, it's an Irish name and a lad's name at that :) And Randy, Mingus is the chief deity in my jazz universe too. Non-jazz types do respond more readily to him because he has that gospelly, 'blues n roots' thing going. He's a fascinating character, a brooding, violent, genius who taught his cat to piss in the toilet (no really, there are instructions on how to train them on the web...wait I'll find it now...here we are http://www.mingusmingusmingus.com/ownwords/catcatalog.html). What a guy!

This is indeed a great jazz mix... some of my very favorites here. For a hint of my jazz tastes, please check out my "Laughable, unphotographable" mix.
