Lady Sings The Blues

Artist Song
Billie Holiday  the very thought of you
billie  you go to my head
nice work if you can get it
the way you look tonight
cant help lovin that man
that old devil called love
pennies from heaven
these foolish things
am i blue
easy living
i can't give you anything but love
when you're smiling
i got a right to sing the blues
jim
the man i love
lover man (oh where can you be)
no good man
what a little moonlight can do
back in your own backyard
they can't take that away from me
solitude
there is no greater love
this is my last affair
i cover the waterfront
god bless the child

Comment:

My tribute to the ultimate female voice. It wasn't just her sublime tones which made these records so remakably good and endurable. The brilliance of the musicians backing her, such as Teddy Wilson and Lester Young, make these recordings, and many others from Billie, the most important pre-rock n roll romantic records. Apologies for the unoriginal title. It sums it up.

Ooh... nice one, Gerry. I vaguely contemplated doing this awhile ago, but I don't have quite enough stuff from each of her "periods" to do so (I have the Verve and Commodore stuff, with access to the Decca stuff, but no Columbia). At some point, I may want a copy of this, my friend (but NO rush--I'm just getting caught up with trades now and need a bit of a break lol). Did you get the Fellows mix yet?

This reminds me that I haven't heard nearly enough Billie Holiday.

Looks great Mr. MacDonald. I'm a bit surprised that you didn't include Strange Fruit, her chart-topping mega-hit.

Thanks to all. I didn't include Strange Fruit because it's not one of my favourites. I know how important and successful it was but it doesn't do much for me. Copies going out this week sometime.

Oh yeah... "Strange Fruit". I'm with Ion on that one, as it is definitely one of my favorites. It says something in favor of this mix, though, that I didn't notice its absence until now... and the mix is still great.
