Comment:

Like Bob Dylan before him, Springsteen has an ever-moving pen that never seems to run out of lyrics — far more than he can ever use — so many of his best-known hits began their lives on other people’s records. Passion is held in check — just barely — in the Pointer Sisters’ “Fire,” as the stutter-step of guitar and piano knock the tune off balance, like a desperate lover’s heartbeat. Danger hangs in the air like an unvoiced threat in Patti Smith’s “Because the Night,” as drums pound out a deep, dark, primal rhythm. And Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes’ bloodless kiss-off “Hearts of Stone” throbs with the bittersweet world-weariness of someone who tried to figure out where love went wrong . . . and failed at that too. And there’s much more — country superstars, alt-rock heroes, and others have ripped entire chapters from the Springsteen songbook.
