Comment:

A mix commissioned by Thom Mohr, after I commissioned him to do the excellent German Girls mix a few months ago. In case you haven't heard, bastard pop (a.k.a. bootlegs) is an unauthorized recording of a rapper's/singer's voice placed over the music of another artist. Of course stuff like this dates back to the earliest days of hip hop (remember Grandmaster Flash's "It's Nasty" with the Tom Tom Club sample?), but it's currently all the rage in the UK. Several websites have sprung up that host hundreds of these creations, but I think these are some of the best. I'm sure they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I dare anyone not to smile while hearing some of these unusual pairings. The last track is actually the intros to about 60 pop songs from the last 40 years mixed seamlessly together -- a bit like "Stars on 45" on crack.

Nice collection Ion. I have heard a few of these. I don't know why but I have the sudden urge to go dig out The Residents THE THIRD REICH 'N' ROLL. Anyway, look forward to hearing this.

Woo, I think I need this one also. That Freelance Hellraiser track was one of the best tunes I heard all last year.

I haven't heard of this stuff either, but it looks like this century's version of Dickie Goodman's Mr. Jaws! I'll be checkin' it out soon.
