Comment:

Despite reports to the contrary, jazz was never dead — it was just waiting for the Bad Plus to come along and give it an energizing kick in the butt. Just as boundary-breakers like Miles Davis united the jazz and rock camps in the early '70s, this titanic trio blew in from the Midwest to turn the jazz world upside down, proving that not only can Ornette Coleman influences coexist with David Bowie tunes, but they can also complement each other. Rock or jazz? Being both and neither at the same time, the Bad Plus boldly goes where no jazzer or rocker has gone before, and here's where you can join in the journey, from a tender piano ballad based around "We Are the Champions" to a freewheeling jazz-funk workout on the "Chariots of Fire" theme. Purists, prepare to have your preconceptions punctured.
