Comment:

Tug on the root of Southern soul and you'll find the river-dipped, heaven-blessed power of gospel bearing soul's weight on its broad, weathered back. Even living in Chicago, Roebuck "Pops" Staples never quite shook the Mississippi mud from his boots, and raised his kids to join a down-home-style family business: making a joyful noise. By the time 1971's "I'll Take You There" gave the band its first #1 hit, they'd already been taking us there for more than a decade, decimating the wall separating gospel music from the pop charts, weaving faith around flesh — and flesh around faith — like nobody's business. And when the Civil Rights Movement made Black Power a reality, the Staples were on the front lines, demanding their own brand of civil rights with "Respect Yourself." Over five decades of a career that landed them Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Staple Singers more than earned their reputation as being "God's greatest hit-makers."
