With "Sweet Secret Peace," Crowded House's Neil Finn takes a quiet solo stroll through the snow-capped mountains of his native New Zealand, while Scotland's Travis skates away on sad Christmas memories with a cover of Joni Mitchell's bittersweet "River." Meanwhile, Michigan's Sufjan Stevens, plucking his banjo, looks determinedly skyward at Christmastime and sings "O Come O Come Emmanuel," a melancholy melody with lyrics based on a 12th-century Latin prayer. Buoyed by a freewheeling Bo Diddley beat and his ready-for-anything New Orleans horn section, Harry Connick, Jr. sounds pretty sure that "(It Must've Been Ol') Santa Claus" who took him for that memorable after-hours sleigh ride.
