No matter how you look at it, M.I.A. must get up some mornings and wonder how she got here; how she went from being a successful art student — she graduated from London's leading design school and helped with the layout of Elastica's second album — to having a Top 10 hit that samples the Clash, gun shots, and the ka-ching of a cash register ("Paper Planes"). The answer's in her albums, which don't subscribe to any particular sound beyond M.I.A.'s own twisted idea of what it means to be a pop star. That usually ends up being a musical version of the collage-heavy prints and eye-gouging colors on her album sleeves, whether it's something as noisy and savage as "Steppin Up" or as basic but banging as "10 Dollar," "Space," and "Bamboo Banga."
