Comment:

My attempt at a representative collection of my favorite (and most people's favorite, it seems) jazz artist. Although there will be at *least* one more volume, I wanted this one to stand on its own and be somewhat "representative" of the various styles that Coltrane explored throughout the evolution of his career while still being a "favorites" mix. As a result, some of my dark-horse favorites ("Tunji", "Love", "Wise One", "Crescent") and some of the better-known Coltrane warhorses ("My Favorite Things", "Giant Steps") had to be passed over. Also, I refused to put more than one song per selected album (it was very strange picking one part of A Love Supreme, btw) and several of my favorites (Crescent, Africa/Brass, Meditations, and Coltrane Plays the Blues, to name a few) are completely unrepresented. At any rate, I'd like to think that this comes close to succeeding, both as the "intro" that I wanted it to be and as a flowing mix.

It's difficult to disrupt the flow, but I think you've done very well. Nice mix Rob.

Difficult to make a mix representative of someone so prodigious, but this does the trick nicely.

Ambitious, and I agree that it works nicely, by the looks of it.

I hear you on the sacrilege of seperating any part of A Love Supreme. This looks quite good though, Rob. Can't do a proper jazz mix myself because the LPs just seem too perfect.

Great mix. I've been thinking a lot about Coltrane recently as I am currently reading Ashley Kahn's A Love Supreme: the story of John Coltrane's signature album. A wonderful book. I also recently got the new A Love Supreme expanded double CD. Really great especially the live version of the complete suite.

It's not really possible to do a Coltrane mix, is it? I mean, he has so many flawless albums. You've certainly hit some high points, though.

I love this. What about his collaborative work with Johnny Hartman?
