Comment:

This was actually the first mix I had made to be entitled 'Cold', for my cousin. Created on the eve of my 20th birthday back in 1999. The year and century were coming to a close and I felt somewhat uneased about it all. This would brings a death to my teens, if you will and I couldn't help but feel a bit grey about that. Thus the cover art, Paul Klee's 'Mourning' a kind of lamentation for my part. The Balanescu Quartet songs suited quite nicely. They are from the soundtrack to the Derek Jarman film 'The Garden'. Jarman directed some Pet Shop Boys videos as well Smiths 'The Queen Is Dead'. What is kind of strange is that 'The Garden' was an album which when I bought it had no idea about at all, but I just had a feeling I should purchase it. I simply liked the cover and the titles of the tracks sounded beautiful. And very pleased I was to find on first listen that the soundtrack was just that... beautiful. And quite interestingly unique as well, which is something most important to me about music. The first half of side b are all cover songs. Smiths, Bowie, Patti Smith, Death In June and Cure. PIL's "Radio Four" is probably one of my favourite songs of all time, with the Joy Division-esque synth at the end, the absolutely most perfect sound in the world.
