Comment:
So many hot pickers have come out of Nashville that the Country Music Hall of Fame ought to have a fire extinguisher in every corner, but a handful have truly hopped to the top of the heap. Merle Travis pioneered a picking style so unique that it was named after him, and after hearing his “Cannonball Rag,” you may find yourself scrutinizing his photo, just to confirm that he didn’t do have four hands. There are 20 digits at work on the appropriately titled “Flying Fingers,” but that’s because human lightning bolt Joe Maphis is joined by his wunderkind disciple Larry Collins (of the Collins Kids) in this mad race of mercury-like licks. And although you may know Jerry Reed best for his down-home charm as Burt Reynolds’ cinematic sidekick, he was first and foremost a fiery fretmonster, as proven by the jolts, jabs, and stabs that leap from his power-picking instrumental “The Claw.”
