Comment:
I had to dig deep for this mix, as even I don't have a lot of flute in my collection. The flute is even more reviled than the clarinet, the subject of my momentously well-received previous mix! =) For good reasons? Maybe. The flute can be a bit `wet'-sounding, as the English say, and its range is limited. Still, there are some folks who have succeeded in using the flute in a jazz context, with Herbie Mann being perhaps the most well known. (I'm still looking for some Mann to complete - well, add to - this mix, so if anyone has, say, Memphis Underground on CD, I'd love to trade for it.) There's some pretty meaty flute work on this mix, as well as some gentler stuff. I expect this mix's reception to be much like the last, which is fine, as I agree the subject matter isn't the most popular. Ah well. Maybe I'll have to create an In Disrepute series? (Heck, this mix even includes some jazz ukulele, so perhaps there's the subject for my next mix!) (Thanks to sport ! for the Lateef track.)Feedback:
Looks very interesting - I'd love to hear it... also, one of the best mix names I've heard in a while!
the flute is so underrated, great stuff
A brave mix. The flute? Hmm..? How does it sound? Still, I like your thinking. Some great musicians!
Can't wait for the kazoo mix. We appreciate your research and specialty mixes. And if that Dizzy tune showed up in my mail box, maybe I too would understand the "flute-ility of it all".
nice one......
Yes, another nice one.
Really nice stuff - I really like the flute (and the clarinet) in jazz. And, as hemizen said, we really appreciate the work you put into these!
I've always fancied doing a flute mix myself but it never happened... This looks like a great shot at it, Edward, made especially beautiful by the presence of two bright moments!
Love the Charles Lloyd and Yusef Latef. "Eastern Sounds" is a terrific album. And what of Hubert Laws?
I don't have much flute in my collection, either (other than Mr. Kirk, really), so this looks really interesting to me.
Nice one. I love that Dolphy track.
Great
Ha! You said "meaty flute". I generally hate the flute, but can't deny the excellence of what I know here, Dolphy & Kirk especially. Check out Herbie Mann's Stone Flute as well for the next volume.
Check out Ron Carter's Uptown Conversation, its a knockout.
I like the flute and I like this mix.
Love 1 through 3 especially! 8 through 11 ain't shabby either.
