Comment:

It's been done before, maybe better, by AOTM'ers like Mohr and Dale, but, having foolishly blown some cash on the recent remastered discs, I had to flex my own Sweet muscle as well. And why, one may ask, WHY waste a round chunk of aluminum on one of the tackiest bubblegum/glam/metal bands ever? Because Sweet will always have special significance for me. The old lp of Desolation Boulevard (the US version, which was actually the UK release Sweet Fanny Adams beefed up with some killer singles) was one of the first albums I ever bought, as a 10-year-old back in '76, and also had the distinction of being the first album I ever bought that my parents truly and thoroughly hated. Which, of course, showed me the true power of rock & roll. Anyway, this mix covers their earliest, most horrifying pure bubblegum tunes ("Lollipop Man" seemingly being a charming ode to stalking children), rolls into their classic bubble-glam period (and if "Poppa Joe" and "Little Willy" aren't some of the happiest tracks ever, I don't know what would be), slips in their initial stabs at self-penned metal, and tosses in the last couple radio hits (the insanely fun "Action," the horrifyingly terrible yet unforgettably catchy "Love Is Like Oxygen"), while completely omitting the bland hard rock from their later days. Enjoy.

Sweet indeed! Every song here is a winner. My band just played 'wig wam bam' last night - you'd have been proud (or horrified to hear me sing it). This was a great band with great hits.

I'm really interested in acquiring this, Marc, as I only know the hits and like those quite a bit. That said, I'd take Pere Ubu, Gang of Four, Mission of Burma or PiL any day of the week... ;-)

Oh yeah! I can't throw a party without putting Little Willy on the dance mix. I'd be very interested in trading for this.

Lovin' it! My single of Action had an army of cellos on the opener... have yet to retrack that one down...

Yeah, the beloved "Action" single was hard to track down (the previously essential "Best Of Sweet" cd used the less-sweetened album version); apparently the new reissue of Give Us A Wink appends the single version, but I didn't bother picking it up (as I don't care for the rest of the album).

My first LP was Band on the Run, but Destination Boulevard was my first 8-track so they hold some significance for me as well. Oddly, my parents actually liked them & frequently borrowed my tape for their parties. I rememember them asking me if I knew what AC/DC was about. I had my suspicions, but they wouldn't be confirmed until I was a few years older.

Boy, I thought I was a Sweet expert but I've never heard that early bubblegum stuff. Or some of the other ones here. Love the band, would love to get the mix! In the meantime I''ve got to go find my old Desolation Boulevard tape.
