Comment:
A two-disc CD set that tracks the progress of `danceable post-punk' into what is now known as `dancepunk'. It all began (apparently, or most noticeably) with Gang of Four, a band that diverted from other post-punk acts such as Wire, Joy Division and The Fall by infusing their music with a rhythmic, danceable groove; heavily influenced by the dance and bass-centric theatrics of funk whilst maintaining the jagged, wiry guitars common to other post-punk bands. In the same year, others such as The Pop Group and Public Image Ltd (with the track "Death Disco") also helped lay the groundwork for future generations of post-punk groovers. During the 80's, the genre became less abrasive and more dancey, with a number of female bands such as ESG, Liliput, Delta 5, and The Au Pairs poking around in dancepunk territory. the 90's saw little action, but in the 00's the great revival began, brought about by the emergence of bands such as The Rapture, !!!, and LCD Soundsystem. The trend peaked at around 2002-2003 and has since died considerably, the only survivors (in terms of quality) being those who have adapted and changed their sound. Notably, it was the Liars who helped end the trend when, with their second album (which was expected to be another amazing slice of manic dancepunk) they went in a completely different direction altogether, opting instead for an album about witches, packed with tribal drumming and haunting atmospherics. However, a few tracks remained strangely danceable, and the blistering stomp of `There's Always On The Broom' is a fitting end to what has been a very strange and unique genre. Overall, both CD's make for a great night's worth of party music!Feedback:
DAMN fine set of mixes, and great liner notes too. I think I'll throw this one in the trainspotter's exhibit...
Fantastic & entertaining mix!!!
Nice notes as well.
Nice notes as well.
Great theme. Excellent mix and notes. I've always liked Entertainment! a whole lot.
Definitely grooving!
Awesome second disc.
This is really impressive. I always find it fascinating to construct a mix in which new songs play off ones that are 20-plus years old. This is a history lesson AND a dance party!
Awesome.
Outstanding! Sorry i missed it last year. Great theme executed brilliantly...
Very cool! Nice choice with the Pop Group. While I agree that Gang of Four were the most infectious and influential, Joy Division definitely contributed to this sound: consider the track "Isolation" or maybe even "Ice Age."
looks absolutely fantastic. i'd play this over and over...
great mix! it'd get my ass out on the dancefloor in a second. i made a similar type mix a few days ago with even some of the same songs, but it's not nearly as cohesive and comprehensive as this one. i'll have to post it.
