Comment:

This was originally planned as a mix for Michelle, but after a heated debate about the merits of the flute in rock music I think I'll be keeping this one for myself. Cover & title recycled from a previous (& now deleted) submission.

Cool stuff. I recently first heard that Scientists track and it's a good one.

Tell those people to put some clothes on.

This is fantastic. Loving the Essex Green and New Pornos selections quite a bit. I like flutes in rock music... and music in general.

Nice hits! I think the flute plays an integral part in rock music. Just ask the Grammy people who voted for Jethro Tull. Plenty to like here -- 8, 14 and 21 especially.

The picture makes worry about the term "flute" all-together.

Anyhoo...
Kick ass mix...I, am intrigued. About the flute debate.

Oh man. So much to love, especially the John Hartford, Holly G, Ike and Tina ... I could go on. However, I am not in favor of flutes in rock and roll music. Ever.

Thanks for the comments everyone. To clarify the great flute debate, Michelle is vehemently against them in all music, but finds their presence in rock to be a crime against the human ear. While not a strong advocate, I don't like to put limits on what instruments should be allowed in which type of music & believe that in certain instances the flute can indeed rock. Choosing Herbie Mann's Stone Flute & the first Tull LP's to make my case failed to sway her.

Of COURSE the flute has a place in rock music, as does any instrument under the sun, including the triangle. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to expand their horizons pronto (no offense to Michelle). And please pardon my french, but vous avez fucking kick-ass taste, and if you are just the junior version, I can only imagine what lo-fi senior's mixes must be like.

Looks a great mix. For me, Jethro Tull are a strong argument against the use of flutes. Ralphie Wiggum however, is a strong argument for them.

Oh, I love this. Firstly, you open with one of my favourite bands, which will always get my vote :) But I also love the Wedding Present, Ike & Tina, TH, Beachwood Sparks, Orange Juice...the whole thing, really. And I have to concur that flutes absolutely have their place in rock. What immediately springs to mind is Flute Loop by the Beastie Boys - okay, it's hip-hop, but hey, it involves flutes, and it's cool!

Like Siobhan, the Super Furries are particular faves of mine so opening with them is always gonna grab my attention. Ditto for R Stevie Moore. And the stuff inbetween is pretty luscious too. And mark me down another flute booster 'specially if it's played by the late great Harold McNair

This is freakin' great, as usual (and you know I have a soft-spot for your Michelle-intended mixes). Btw, I just caught the Essex Green live last Saturday and have been listening to "Mrs. Bean" almost constantly since then.

No, Siobhan, noooo!!! "Flute Loop" is not by the Beastie Boys. "Flute Thing" is by The Blues Project, and damn those haploid beasts for sampling it.

However, long live the beautiful Richard Ashcroft for his genius sampling of Allen Klein. Smooch!

There's a lot to like on this mix lo-fi altho i have to say as a fellow super furries fan i would've gone for "fuzzy birds" from fuzzy logic. One of the great flute solo's in rock music! Love 19-22 btw.
