I am going through mental/character changes right now and its really taxing. so i needed music to calm me down. the tone is pretty obvious, with the hooks of #10 and #20 and sounds of DJ Mitsu the Beats providing much of the basis. title comes from a friend who said that he appreciates sleep time the most because that's when he doesn't have to think about all the things he hasn't accomplished, that plague him when he gets up in the morning and throughout the day. i'm the reverse, staying up all night thinking of everything unaccomplished.

Notes for people who care:
-can you tell i'm jocking this Mitsu? Japanese, successor to Krush with more mainstream sensibility. little more psyche-headnodic than typical jazzy hip hop. resonant, soulful, good vibed.
-pay attention to the musical transition from 8-10: i think its fun to follow the rhythms of bass, guitar, vibraphone. because once you get really deep into it, #9 kicks your ass. one of the coolest beats Talib has used in recent years. smoothes out with #10 being the best new neosoul track i've heard (off Promo vol 4, of Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label, 2005) in recent months. its really a favorite right now. i picture a duet dance to it because it tells a story.
-#11-15. I don't stay up on a lot of krunk hyphie stuff. But this track is nuts. ghetto ass beat with strings. I was jocking it after I heard Diplo throw down in a 2004 set. (did you know DJ Shadow is going to include David Banner on his next album? Real krunk is apparently from Mississippi. haha..) The transition goes like this: raw from 11-13. lord knows MF Doom is a raw m-f-er and madlib's music has that quality also. anyone recognize King Ghidra? Some Asian shit right there. Vibes/Jazz from 13-14, bass licks from 14-15.
-#15-17. 15-16 was a funny echoed relation, thats all. To me Hideo is more aesthetically in tribute to Krush than Mitsu. If you listen to Krush's 'Spiritual Prayer' you'll know what I'm talking about. 16 is there because its spacey-ness makes 17 that much better. not that i needs it, because it is straight butter. resonant and sharp, smooth, relaxing. and that's from 2003. nigga pleeeeease listen to it
-#18 is one of the better trip hoppy type songs to come out recently. Roots Manuva is coming off a dope collaboration with Sa-Ra Creative Partners "Too Cold" also. really grimey (that's an actual genre!). veteran. thus, a Coachella berth. it works better after 16 aesthetically, but i went for the contrast.
-#4 and #19 are kind of like tribute to recently deceased Jaydee/JDilla. the Erykah track is one of the best neosoul tracks ever, in my opinion.. and really, Dangelo and Badu define the sound. and there Jdilla was behind the boards. I didn't include Pharcyde 'Runnin' because there was a sleepless vibe to the mix. but i could have since i put so much damn Mitsu on. not that you care
-#10 and #20 have really nice hooks/choruses. as in messages behind. their placements were slightly deliberate yes. Mitsu did a nice remix of 'Hope' which stood out to me first, but i used that in my last mix. stop talking about him waylan, he gets boring.
-#6 is just really happy to listen to. Japanese kats are up on it, seriously. (Mitsu, 7 samurai, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Krush, Nigo, Hideo, among others i've yet to dig up). I mentioned Halcali as a Jpop foursome to someone and he immediately thought about them frying something bad to eat. something really bad.
...

enjoy? let me know what you think, actually. the alternate version has minor arrangement changes and substitutions, like Kero One 'My Story', and Little Brother 'The Getup'.

I love this. Brilliant.

King Ghidra should be King Geedorah, though.. shouldn't it? Haven't heard that track, so not sure, but as you probably know Doom also went by that name on his brilliant "Take Me to Your Leader" album from 2003.

I'm stealing a few of these tracks to my summer comps.
