Mouth Music
Comment:
This mix is a more secular companion piece to my Wondrous Voices and Sacred Harmonies. Little Spencer Boys' God Help Us! Help Us Find Our Hearts! reminded me that I had intended to do such a follow-up for a while already.1) This remix from the Anthology album lets you hear the vocal harmonies without instruments. There are nine voices: John, Paul and George's vocals were recorded once and then overdubbed twice more.
2) These four a cappella vocalists who cover rock & roll numbers received a Grammy nomination for their arrangement of this song.
3) Petra Haden recreated the Who's 1967 LP The Who Sell Out, entirely a cappella, performing all the rhythms, instruments and harmonies with her voice.
5) Imogen Heap sings in harmony with herself with the help of a vocoder.
7) Björk accompanied by the London Choir; a track from her Medúlla album, which consists of almost nothing but singing and vocal samples.
8) Eric Whitacre is one of the bright stars in contempory concert music. Here is one of his choral compositions, performed by the Brigham Young University Singers.
9) - 11) Voices and harmonies from Bulgaria, Georgia and Belgium (the last song based on a Central African Pygmy chant).
12) Sweet Honey in the Rock has been singing a cappella in the African American tradition of over 30 years.
14) The oldest recording on this mix, from 1914. Taken from Harry Smith's "Anthology of American Folk Music."
15) Songs played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. Ensembles such as the SNCC Freedom Singers developed the use of music to carry the Movement's message to audiences far removed from the struggle and gained support for grassroots activities. "We Shall Not be Moved" was recorded in 1963, and one of the members of The Freedom Singers, Bernice Johnson, later became the founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock.
16)-18) These three songs have some instrumental backup, but the because of the strong harmony singing I felt I had to include them in this mix, anyway. Please note that the Mills Brothers recreated the trumpets and trombones with only their voice. Track 17 was recorded in 1947, track 18 in 1952.
19) The Cherryholmes are probably the hottest new bluegrass group at the moment, and you can read their interesting story and hear some of their songs here.
22) - 26) A musical trip through Europe with stops in France, Norway, Finland, Austria, and Germany.
24) The incredible Swingle Singers with a track that's hinting at a possible volume 2 of Mouth Music, featuring a cappella songs from other galaxies!
Thanks to Nest of Viper for tracks 2,4, 19, 23, and 28; lostinthemix for 13; and Thomas Mohr for 21, 22, 24, and 26. I can't really say if there is a hidden track at the end of this mix, otherwise it wouldn't be hidden anymore, but if there were such a track, it would be from Thomas Mohr, too.

Feedback:
We shall be moved with this one. Very nice, Claude.
Great lookin' mix!
Wow Claude!!! This is beautiful, friend! If you see anything in my mixes that you'd like, I'd sure like to add this to my collection. Super cover as well.
Excellent!
Fantastic collection of tracks, Claude! Informative notes and a great cover, too.
Great follow-up. Looks like a rewarding listen!
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH-mazing.
Looks like a truly lovely piece of work. Can't wait to hear it. And, needless to say, it was a pleasure, sir, to help you out. ;)
This looks very interesting although I have to confess only knowing 1,5 & 6. Great notes aswell. I'm off to check out The Cherryholmes....
Heavenly
Phenomenal! I discovered the Bobs when I saw them do this tune while opening for Robin Williams in the mid eighties. Would love to hear this.
Yes! That Bob's tune is soooooooo well done. I would love to hear this entirely.
A marvellous idea and a beautiful realisation.
I'm speechless!! This turned out great, with plenty of obscure and interesting selections. I'm singing the praises of your cover too!
Impressive to say the least.
Wow, looks like this turned out really well; I can't wait to hear it either. And, it was my great pleasure to be allowed help.
Very nice. I have this wonderful image of all of these people on the tracklist singing in harmony...
Thanks for the link. I really loved this mix and I'm listening to it again now. Bravo.
And where is this "link" to which DiCarlo alludes? I cry foul. Is this gorgeous mix meant for a "select" few only? All I ask is justice for all...Oh wait, I could just ask nicely, he asked nicely.
Inspiring. I do love those mysterious Bulgarian & Finnish voices & I bet those voices form other galaxies will be something else, too.
Who needs instruments when you can find your voice?
Who needs instruments when you can find your voice?
This looks really fantastic! I've heard Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares and love that and some other things on here too, although there's lots I'd be intrigued to listen to. And I really, really want that Anthology of American Folk Music. :)
wow!
I just discovered this site and am eager to hear the mouth music--can someone tell me how to go about getting it?
