The Comedian Harmonists
Comment:
lanhamyodelis always sending me off on entertaining musical excursions, and this one was inspired by his recent mouth-watering
Mouth Music .
So: imagine a male vocal harmony group
combining all the licks & tricks of the Delta Rhythm Boys, the early Mills Brothers, & the Ink Spots,
(and/or the Bobs, the Manhattan Transfer, Shooby Taylor, & Rockapella, if you don't know those earlier ancestors)
- oh, hell, just take a listen to these devilishly heavenly chord changes!!!
I'm not diligent enough to link up this whole mix, but I really want you to hear
at least a taste of what I'm talking about here, so I've put up a seven-day link to a couple of sample tracks
, knowing that any description won't come close to doing this group justice.
There are several commercial anthology CDs available of the Comedian Harmonists, AND a fine
movie
of their career
(-- do see the movie, it will really bring home to you
the tensions of performing as a part-Jewish combo in Germany in the early 1930's - PLUS it's full of irresistible tunes -- ),
-- so no one really needs this mix as an introduction,
but for my own pleasure I've selected here most of my own favorites from their extensive repertoire.
Two of these are in English, (for my fellow linguistically-challenged Americans),
but even those not fluent in German will likely be able to figure out that
"Der Onkel Bumba aus Kalumba" is their version of "When Yuba Plays the Rhumba on his Tuba",
and of course "Creole Love Call" is not in any known language.
I generally have a strong bias in favor of female vocals, but these guys transcend any gender gap.
An angelic choir with a wicked sense of musical humor -- oh, hell, just give them a listen & hear for yourself!!

Feedback:
You're the coolest, hepcat!
Now that's comedy!Quite literally -- a smile and a song.
That's a real treat, thanks.
Oh yeah, you're good.
Outstanding!
Very cool stuff indeed. I'd really love to hear their take on the Barber of Seville Overture. (HINT! HINT!)
If only schooling was this educational and rewarding.
Most interesting! Will definitely check out the well-dressed men.
Spitze! I actually considered including "Veronika der Lenz ist da" in my Mouth Music mix, but I didn't have the file and wasnt' sure if I wanted to buy a whole anthology of the group. So herzlichen Dank for the link, and besten Dank for putting the spotlight on this great ensemble! "Veronika" could be heard on the radio quite often when I grew up in Switzerland in the '60s/'70s. It's a classic.
Well, if I ever put together a volume 2 of Mouth Music, I definitely should consult with you first...

Wow - if the opening tunes are any indication, this is one fine collection of tunes. THanks for hipping me to these guys.
Fabulous!
Never Heard 'em.Would like to.I can trust your taste or opening a new door of musical exploration.Maybe on the next trade?
The Comedian Harmonists are up there with the Boswell Sisters and the Mills Bros. I do a search on AOTM to see who likes them, and of COURSE you would pop up :). Missed this the first time around. Let me know if you want a copy of the song "Wenn ist vergnugt, bin muss ich singen"--it's my fave, and you'll love it. Aaaah, it's good to go back in time with this stuff...
