Comment:
A Triple Disc Exursion into the deep, dark bowels of Subterranean Metal. A phrase introduced in early '05 by Wire Magazine. A collection of doom metal artists (many of which highlighted by the author) - past and present... This one was months and many dollars in the making...all well worth the effort. And, to all Death Metal fans, please don't feel overlooked, a seperate collection will be coming your way.
Well, I hope you all enjoy.
Defintion (as per Wikipedia):
Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged as a recognised subgenre in the mid-1980s. It is slow and heavy and intended to evoke an atmosphere of darkness, despair and melancholy. It is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, and a number of early Black Sabbath tracks, such as "Black Sabbath", are often considered embryonic or prototypical doom metal songs.

Feedback:
Looks good man.
Fantastic Chris. I love this shit. Plenty of unfamiliar mixed with lots of favorites. I especially dig the Boris, Pharaoh Overlord, Sunn O))), Electric Wizard, Corrupted and Burning Witch picks.
Oh dear, Chris. You've discovered that sealed room and found a way to open it. Everything had been frantically piled in there and now, thanks to you, it's tumbled out and is strewn across the floor of genres. I assume this mix is your attempt at bringing order to the chaos. You appear to have done a good job. But my ignorance precludes a meaningful comment. Your presentation is astounding, as usual; your notes are terrific. As to your mix - I must await the results of further investigation. I don't know how you do it, Chris, but I'm glad you do.

I dont think i'll ever get Metal in any of its many guises but I tip my hat to you for showing such mastery of yet another genre.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Ohhhh, yeah man. I too, share a deep love of this stuff w/you and Mr. Burns (and a few other folks 'round here). This looks totally amazing and dark. So many favorites on here, I won't bother to list them all, though I should say several of them are due to your generosity. Insanely great stuff.
By turns frightened and turned on. Kind of like musical porn.
I've tried to get into this stuff but I just can't. Musically its tight, but the vocals can be nauseating.
An acquired taste, indeed. But, much like certain gourmet items, once I got over the initial shock...the intense and delightful flavors were undeniable.
But, I can definately see one's point if they are not into this collection.

Now this is a labour of love. In all probability I would love most of it - but probably not in one sitting. Good work tho . . .
Holy Holy. Whose blood must I spill to get a copy?
New Jersey shall bow to thee, Mr. Gnome, oh lord of darkness. Makes me glad I'm in Southern California...
Looks.... ah, interesting. Have you tried cranking this one up at work?
I'm with Salman on this one. I like the music but the vocals can send me for cover. An acquired taste for sure.
Looks brrrilliant.
Only familiar with a few tracks here but to misquote Mick Jagger, "it's only death metal but I like it". I'm just curious to know if you've listened to all three discs back-to-back in one sitting.
In all honesty, I couldn't listen to these back to back. Or really any genre specific series of tunes....WAY too much A.D.D. This "mix" is more of a somewhat comprehensive overview of some the more visible artists with the genre.
I'm utterly stumped . Can't say I know much (read any) of the picks here. I have my suspicions that this is the cream of the crop.
Know zilch here but then I know zilch about subterranean metal...I should guess that it's not my bag but nevertheless if I should decide to dip my feet then I'll use this mix as my launching pad. As usual good art work on discs and cover and my hat off to you for investigating new genres!
A very noteworthy package, Chris. I am not much of a metal fan in any sense. Yet, looking at this and hearing that the latest Lips record reverts to Black Sabbath, well, it doesn't and never did ring true as well as your liner notes do regarding this mix. For all of that, this is a mix I feel I should have for those visitors who are into something more than I am. I am sincere when I say this looks fabulous.
I am not a metal fan but admire those who enjoy many style of music. This reminds me of X-Angel whose mixes use to show up on this site.
Appreciate the effort that goes into any/every one of your mixes but I'd rather stick a hot poker in my eardrum than listen to death metal - No offence intended Chris!
French Connection: Can understand your view point.
But, not to be a stickler...death and doom metal are different styles of music.
Emperor, Arcturus, Opeth, Slayer (Thrash, really), Napalm Death, Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Samoth, Death, Venom, Bathory, Cradle of Filth, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Arcturus, Meshuggah, At the Gates, et al... would be considered Death Metal Bands.
The bands, here (for the most part), can be lumped in other categories: doom, sludge, drone metal, et al.
But, chances are...these artists are similar enough in aesthetic and mood that if you hate one, you very well might not like the other. I find Doom to be a tad easier and immediate as there certain atmospheric and ambient elements that can be quite meditative and at times somewhat psychedelic, resulting a listening experience in which I can immerse myself.
I will be doing an overview of Death Metal at a latter time. My apologies to those who don't care for this kind of thing...but, I like highlighting path's less traveled (from time to time). And, am not offended by those who don't take to this kind of thing.

How the hell could I miss this? Looks like an excellent piece of dark mixwork, indeed. Like Mssrs. Burns and Porter I'm always down with a bit of slow droning drum & guitar work and throaty bellowing. Loooove the Crowbar, Cathedral, Pentagram, St. Vitus and Cannibal Massacre, 'specially.
I'd really, really like to hear this. This is a sub-genre that's been interesting me lately. Let me know what I can send to you in return.
