Another in the series. Themed and inspired by a purchase from Aquarius Records:Ghost OrchidReview: "The Conet Project from beyond the grave!?! Perhaps that's a good way of describing this baffling, terrifying, occasionally laughable, but always compelling album. It's been out of print for a very long time, and we're pleased to see The Ghost Orchid haunting our shelves once again! To recap, The Ghost Orchid documents instances of something called "Electronic Voice Phenomenon," the paranormal appearance of strange voices (which at times sing and speak in multiple languages) on magnetic tape when there shouldn't be any voices there at all... Respected parapsychologists have postulated that these voices are those of dead people (i.e. ghosts) or possibly of extraterrestrial origin! Unlike The Conet Project, which cross referenced the audio tracks with written information, The Ghost Orchid presents these recordings with the audio commentary of one of several researchers (Nadia Fowler, Raymond Cass, and Lief Elggren -- the Swedish performance/audio artist and a part time collaborator with the Hafler Trio), explaining the findings. These recordings are the findings of a number of parapsychologists including Dr. Konstantine Raudive, Friedrich Jurgenson, and Raymond Cass. While there is something wholly terrifying about these recordings, there is an absurd question about these ghostly voices that we have to ask: Why are the majority of these recordings in Latvian? At any rate, The Ghost Orchid manages to be both spooky and silly, and is definitely a fascinating listen from a pure sound perspective regardless of how disturbing and/or amusing you might find the alleged sound source itself. For non sequitur pop culture reference, the sample "You are sleeping, you do not want to believe" which concludes The Smith's "The Rubber Ring" hails from an old recording made by Raudive and can be found in its entirety here. Brilliant!"Add to this some Experimental, Dark Ambient, Early 20th Century Cylinder Recordings, Early 20th Century (Tape Hiss Filled) Americana and Jazz and many, many hours of editing and sequencing and voila...chilling stuff. And, so not to forget a little bit of entertainment, here's another snippet from the glorious publication, Weird New Jersey:The White Lady LegendMany people have told me of the "White Lady" who haunts Branch Brook Park on the Belleville/Newark border. There are those who claim to have seen this apparition near a white painted tree in the park. She is seen especially on rainy nights. The story is rather creepy: There was a teenaged boy who was looking for a date for the high school prom. He met a girl who he immediately fell for, and asked her to be his date. The girl happily agreed. The night of their date, they decided to take a drive through Branch Brook Park on their way to the prom. It was a raining heavily, and visibility was bad. The car suddenly began to skid out of control and crashed head-on into a tree. The boy was fine, escaping with only some minor scratches. The girl, however, was dead.Today the tree that they crashed into is painted white in the form of a person. Witnesses have recalled seeing a lady in white next to the tree, who beckons them toward her on rainy nights. Perhaps she is still waiting for her prom date to join her. It's creepy to me!
Feedback:
We'll all speak Latvian on the other side.
That Patten and Lee tune is serious stuff.
Excellent and detailed examination of the subject. Dark yet compelling...
This looks amazing and too scary for me, the Diamanda Galas alone would send me in search of an exorcist. Did the Discovery Channel put you up to this?
Really amazing stuff here, Chris. I was pretty intrigued by that Aquarius review a couple of weeks ago. Spooky.
wow
Wow, an extremely moody, ethereal and generally haunting listen, by the looks of things. Fantastic work. I gotta hear that Ghost Orchid stuff.
I want to believe!
A damnably fine lookin' mix this!
Menacing indeed. Cool mix.
I'd love to hear this!
Trade perhaps?
Trade perhaps?
Uhm, so I was living in Kansas City, MO and....to make this post short....a voice started talking to me out of my speakers which were on the wall and had NO electricity running through them. The voice said "Get out of here now." I ignored it thinking it was my own noggin' playing games on me. Then it said "Get Out Of Here Now! And I Mean It!!" Not only did it unnerve me, even my cats and my rabbit got freaked out and we ran out on the balcony and then felt stupid because there was no exit from the balcony. I managed the courage to go back through the living room to the back bedroom to sit there and wait until anything else happened, thinking the exit from the apartment was in that room. About five minutes later, my sister came home and I said "hello" thinking to keep quiet about the whole thing. Later that evening, I said to her "Remember you asking me how my day went and I said that it was ordinary? Well, I was lying. Something happened and I am going to tell you what happened and I don't care if you believe me or not, or think I am crazy. It is the truth that it happened and it is the truth that it should not have happened." And I told her. She asked if it bothered me and I said well, it was weird, but I knew I was not going to be harmed. It was just unnerving. She told me to go beyond it. The next morning, she was already awake when I got up and she said "Sit down, I want to tell you something. I am very glad you told me what happened yesterday. Because had you not told me, I never would have told anyone, and it happened to me this morning." Later, we found out that the apartment was the former headquarters of the Kansas City mafia and to quote the people from across the street, "a lot of bad stuff happened there. You don't understand it and don't know it, but that place sat empty and dark for a very long time before you white folks moved in there. No one wants to go in that building. We've been watching you. You must have very very strong souls."I would love to hear this.
Shiveringly wonderful.
I only know the NWW and Diamanda tracks, but this looks interesting.
