Comment:
Yeah, okay, I know...definitely one for the guilty pleasure files. This is probably the most thoroughly un-hip mix I've ever posted here, but seeing as how my first memories include hearing various "Off The Wall" hits on my little transistor radio as a toddler and seeing Michael's fame grow to gargantuan proportions with a string of huge hit singles and videos during my childhood, it's hard for me to ever shake my fondness for him (even with his increasingly psychotic behavior and alarming outward appearance).I own more of his catalogue than I want to admit and noticed that every hits collection that has been released is missing essential songs ("History" doesn't even have "Smooth Criminal" for chrissakes) or seems flawed in some way (too much later material, too many sappy ballads, no Jacksons hits)...which inspired me to put this together a few months ago. I tried to stick mainly to his dancier material--which I will still maintain is some of the greatest music the "ass-shakin'" genre has ever seen--but threw in two fine ballads as well. Aside from "Stranger In Moscow" (which I honestly think is kinda haunting), there's absolutely nothing past the "Bad" album here (even though I own everything up through "History"). I was pleased to not feel obligated to include many of his hits or ballads and pretty much got everything I need on here (except for maybe a couple "Thriller" tracks or possibly "Remember The Time").I realize many think he was never the same after leaving The Jackson Five (while some others think he was a joke to begin with), but I'll staunchly defend pretty much anything here, bar possibly "We Are Here To Change The World" (included largely out of nostalgia because of its appearance in the long-defunct Disneyland attraction "Captain EO," which I loved growing up) and maybe "Beat It."In the words of Richard Jeni, "Michael Jackson's a cautionary tale for all of us...an example of what happens when you keep fixing something until it's broke!"UPDATED: October 3rd, 2006. I realized recently that I'm hardly ever in the mood to hear "Beat It." Plus, stylistically, it stuck out like a sore thumb on this disc, interrupting the flow. Coincidentally, a few months back I unearthed a fantastic MJ song that I had somehow missed when it was released: "Who Is It?" I've owned "Dangerous" since the day it came out but have hardly ever listened to it, so discovering this song was a real revelation. It quickly became one of my favorite MJ songs. The song was six and a half minutes and wouldn't quite fit in the hole where "Beat It" once was, so I had to edit over a minute out of the lengthy and repetitive end section. No big loss. This song simply had to be included at all costs.
Feedback:
Well, the first three; then 9, 12, and 15.
Oh, and 10!
You just have to start a MJ-Compilation with "Wanna be..." - that's obligatory. Only one objection: if you add "We are here to change the world", why not "Another Part Of Me"? That's one of MJ's finest tracks and also from "Captain Eo". And to close with "Stranger In Moscow" is just the thing to do.
actually I love 1,2,3,5,7,9,19,11,15 but I don't think I can't stand the rest
Five!! Five!!
What, no Ben???
I like-to-love 1, 2, 8, 9, 11 and 14, but I'm with Peter on the rest of it. A brave stand, though, my friend--bravo!
Yeah, I'ld have to go back to "I'll Be There" for at least a tune or two.
MJ circa "Off the Wall" was a great artist, no doubt about it.
Great music to scream to while tearing your T-Shirt off while standing on top of a car!
The first track is a great opener and song. Girlfriend really digs the Off The Wall Album and it's grown on me, as well.

A*Park..."Another Part Of Me" *is* included. (Track 16.)Thanks for the kinds words, all. I normally don't feel any need whatsoever to "apologize" for my taste, but this one was indeed borderline.
Guilty?!?! Perhaps you should see a psychologist about that. Michael was undeniably amazing back in the day, and you oughta feel proud to love this music!
He did some great stuff. I feel for/am fascinated by him. He's his own HBO miniseries of craziness. But I do love his version, late Jackson 5 really, of Forever CameToday. I can't say I'd stand by everything on your list here, but that's what guilty pleasures and love are all about ... personal taste.
I applaud this. Other than his Jackson Five masterpieces, and Thriller, what else is worth having by Mr. Jackson? Is Off the Wall any good?
Steve, "Off The Wall" is great. IMHO, the best tracks are represented here (title track, "Working Day And Night," "Rock With You," "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough"). "Bad" has its moments, but I dunno if I'd recommend owning it. Everything after that has maybe 2-3 tracks worth owning. It's not that the post-"Bad" albums are horrible (I know a lot of folks who think "Dangerous" is his best record), but to me they don't even approach the greatness of his heyday material.
I agree with Orchid, nothing wrong with early Michael Jackson. Looks thrilling.
