THE PENDLETONES (An Atypical Beach Boys Primer)
Comment:
This is something I've been brainstorming for a long time. This mix is a response to "cooler" friends of mine who, like many, write off the Beach Boys as just a whitebread, sunshine-y surf band (something I myself was guilty of for many years before a good friend set me straight). So no real hits to speak of here, and nothing any earlier than "Pet Sounds" (although "Let Him Run Wild" was on my list for a while). I've even used the band's original name (Brian hated the name Beach Boys, and it's pretty easy to see why).I thought leading off with the double whammy of "Our Prayer" and "Surf's Up" was a good idea, as it'd hit the listener right off the bat with something magnificent that they probably wouldn't expect to hear from the band. I didn't want to include anything *too* twee or typical, which means one of my favorite Beach Boys songs--"Add Some Music To Your Day"--had to go. "Caroline No" almost got tossed because of its sentimentality, but it's so wonderful that I couldn't bring myself to do it...besides, it's all the way at the end of the disc. If they don't like it, they can just shut it off. :-)Both "Heroes & Villains" and "Vegetables" are edits I made of the originals, mirroring their structures in the 2004 version of "SMiLE." I used the stereo remix of "Heroes & Villains" from the "Endless Harmony" compilation for the bulk of it. The cantina and a cappella tag sections are in mono. The last songs excised here were "Johnny Carson," "Funky Pretty" and, most regrettably, "Be With Me." However, I think this is a really solid set of songs, and if my friends' minds aren't opened up at least a little by these wonderful tunes then I'll be forced to come to the conclusion that they're simply heartless, soulless individuals. ;-)So...think this will do the trick?
EDITED: I couldn't stand it any longer. I swapped "Long Promised Road" with "Be With Me." "Road" just wasn't really working here anyway. Besides, now Dennis is represented.
EDITED 4/13/06: I'm a relentless perfectionist. Juggled many of the tracks around, as the flow just wasn't working. Broke up the long string of slow songs in the middle and changed track 3 to more of a pot-boiler.
Feedback:
If it doesnt do the trick then yeah they really are soulless. Youve done a brilliant job here, bravo.
Looks wonderful.
great stuff
Brings a ray of sunshine into my day, superb.
This is an absolutely top-notch BBs comp.
Can't think of a better way to introduce novices to their later period. Nice work!
A very interesting collection of a great band.
super - all great.
Looks like a great Beach Boys primer. A shame not to see "Good Vibrations," but I guess that constitutes a big hit.
Yes, this should definitely do the trick. Great selection.
excellent! Thanks for 19, an often overlooked favorite of mine.
I'm already a BB fan but I'ld still like to hear this.
Very nice, very nice indeed. Would love to trade for a copy of my Briorian Chants.
Nicely played. I especially dig the first 28 picks. We covered many of the same picks for second half Beach Boys collections.
Nice work! I can see how it could be tough to settle on just 28. I'd love to hear your edits.
Yep, this'd do it. Great.
Cool indeed... and nobody who writes off the BBs in such a manner is remotely cool. This may have once been the case, certainly as the various shards of the band churned out crap in the 80s, but the renaissance of Pet Sounds as one of the truly essential albums of all time, and the resurgence of Smile (albeit the marginally less interesting reworked Wilson version) have pretty much firmed up their rep. Much grooviness here.
