Comment:
The Hell-Bound TrainA Texas cowboy lay down on a barroom floor,
Having drunk so much he could drink no more;
So he fell asleep with a troubled brain,
To dream that he rode on a hell-bound train.
The engine with murderous blood was damp,
And was brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp;
An imp for fuel was shoveling bones,
While the furnace rang with a thousand groans.
The boiler was filled with lager beer,
And the Devil himself was the engineer;
The passengers were a most motley crew
Church member, atheist, Gentile and Jew.
Rich men in broadcloth, beggars in rags,
Handsome young ladies, withered old hags.
Yellow and black men, red, brown and white,
All chained together -- O God, what a sight!
While the train rushed on at an awful pace,
The sulfurous fumes scorched their hands and face;
Wider and wider the country grew,
As faster and faster the engine flew
Louder and louder the thunder crashed,
And brighter and brighter the lightning flashed;
Hotter and hotter the air became,
Till the clothes were burnt from each quivering frame.
And out of the distance there arose a yell,
"Ha, ha," said the Devil, "we're nearing hell!"
Then, oh, how the passengers shrieked with pain,
And begged the Devil to stop the train.
But he capered about and danced with glee,
And laughed and joked at their misery.
"My faithful friends, you have done the work,
And the Devil never can a payday shirk.
"You've bullied the weak, you've robbed the poor,
The starving brother you've turned from the door;
You've laid up gold where the canker rust,
And you have given free vent to your beastly lust.
"You've justice scorned and corruption sown,
And trampled the laws of nature down;
You have drink, rioted, cheated, plundered, and lied,
And mocked at God in your hell-born pride.
"You have paid full fare, so I'll carry you through;
For its only right you should have your due.
Why, the laborer always expects his hire,
So I'll land you safe in the lake of fire --
"Where your flesh will waste in the flames that roar,
And my imps torment you forever more."
Then the cowboy awoke with an anguished cry,
His clothes wet with sweat and and his hair standing high.
Then he prayed as he'd never had prayed till that hour
To be saved from his sin and the demon's power.
And his prayers and pleadings were not in vain;
For he never rode the hell-bound train.

Feedback:
Damn fine lookin'. Hope that links up by tomorrow as I'd love to listen to this on our upcoming roadtrip as we dodge Indiana teenage snipers.
this is fantastic - i can't even begin to name some of the highlights there's so many, though i will say i'm glad to see a nebraska track from the boss. excellent job
i forgot to rate this with my first comment, so this is just so i can give you five stars
What is this? a gnome episode in which I know all but four tracks!? Great looking mix sir. Great Molina and Califone picks.
This is incredible! That's gotta be the coolest cover art you've put together yet, and the theme in general is awesome. I ditto anthony, there's too many good picks here to name. Can't wait to hear this!
Right on track with this un Chris. Loads to like here but Leadbelly is the one that had me steamin' an'a rollin.'
Man, this hits me where I live.
I can feel the sawdust, see the rails, smell the whiskey, hear the wails....the labors have paid off on this one musicgnome. Bravo!
You're in a country I don't know so well; that Gonzßlez -> Cash stretch is great, I do know that much.
Trouble bound... what a fine mix. So many great picks.
We are not worthy....
Guess that pretty much smashes the mixer's block, eh?
Fuckin' beautiful, gnomie! I especially love that first disc, but the whole thing is superb, man.
Damnably good. A non-stop musical delight. Never mind the destination, the journey is its own reward. Thanks for the ticket.
Very impressive!
Hell yes, Sir! I'm really liking side 2 myself...
Wow, this is a hope diamond among the many gems you have produced.
This looks incredible!
This looks excellent! Do you know tha Savoy Brown song Hellbound Train? That would fit in here, I think. I loved that band in their classic ablum period, from about 69 thru 72. Hellbound Train was 1972.
The Traveling Wilburys also recorded a song called 'Tweeter and the Monkey Man' that could fit right in. Dylan sang lead. I've had a listen to a lot of tracks on here today and must say this mix is top class!
Thanks to your linking generosity I'm riding this train right now, & as we approach the Gates of Hell it's getting HOT!
Lots of sinister singers & sinners on this train & I don't believe it's bound for glory, no . . . Some spooky great celebrations of the Dark Side here . . . thanks!

This is train I'd gladlly get aboard on. Fantastic mix.
This is an absolutely awesome mix. A great, great listen Chris. If this is what Hell sounds like, I don't wanna go to heaven..
Fantastic- kind of like the soundtrack to the Preacher movie if they get round to making it. Great job.
Musically rich and incredibly atmospheric - I love this. Thanks so much for the link. The cover art is perfect, too.
Truly remarkable. Thanks for this!

And, early on, a adjusted image from that album was a candidate for the mix. I chose the artwork you see here, instead...well, obviously.Thanks to all for the kind comments.
Could have sworn I commented on this . . . . I was actually just coming back to tell you that this damn excellent mix accompanied me on a very irresponsible solo drive across the sand to the mountains of Oman this morning. Perfect desert music, and a perfect mix. Thanks. I think I've got a slight preference for disc1, but the whole thing is monstrously fantastic.
