Comment:
This has been in the works for quite some time and is designed to be a companion to what I (and many others, I guess) feel is THE essential Hawkwind document, the double-disc 1973 live set, Space Ritual. As a result, I included nothing from that release on this mix (although it was painful to *not* include "Born to Go," which has no studio version) and decided to end the mix in 1975 when Lemmy left to form Motorhead. I've got to admit that I'm pretty satisfied with the result--although just about all of the 'wind's studio albums are very, very uneven (with the possible exception of Hall of the Mountain Grill), their greatest moments are absolute classics, and there's certainly no denying the muscle of the "Silver Machine" and "Urban Guerilla" non-LP singles. Thanks to lo-fi for his assistance in getting a few of these tracks.Feedback:
Whoa Rob, if you could send this my way, I would be greatful.
Most excellent, though my personal fave album of theirs is 'Quark Strangeness & Charm.'
I used to share a house with a couple of Hawkwind fanatics who kinda put me off with their incessant LSD induced Silver Machine binges although looking at this there are a few tracks that evoke fond memories so maybe I'm over it.
Wow... this is freaky. I have just been playing a hell of a lot of Hawkwind around the house and in the car this past week while introducing this great band to my 17 year old son who immediately put Hall of the Mountain Grill and both CDs of Space Ritual on his iPod. Great stuff.
I LOVE Hawkwind . . . . . . in fact, I think it was around 1981 I went to the very last Stonehenge festival where Hawkwind played. As they finished their set, the whole festival site resembled a battlefield with smoke and bodies everywhere. Also playing, as I recall, was The Enid, another fave band of mine.Anyway, great mix.
This looks really essential.
Love the oppening and closing tracks
Can't go wrong with hawkwind.
Totally in agreement with your assesmnet of Space Ritual vs. the studio LP's. Yeah, you have to overlook some of the sci-fi crap to find the killer tunes, all of which are gathered here. Only omission I'd say is Shouldn't Do That, but I could see where you'd skick that one due to length.
I can't contribute much more to the discussion here, but from what I do know of Hawkwind, your and lo-fi's points are pretty spot-on; Space Ritual's pretty much where it's at. Come to think of it, I haven't listened to them in a while....*goes a-rummaging*...Great SA work once again Mr. Conroy!
Total bad ass band. They fucking rocked like no other before or since. Amazing job compiling this.
I agree with hemizen, I would love a copy of this. A truely bad assed mix.
Rob - I'd love to trade for this if you want one of mine. I really don't know this band at all.
