Comment:

the get fresh flow's third installment sees the first (semi-) genre exercise in the series - here, i tackle power pop, pop/rock & its direct offshoots & influences. of course, i don't adhere completely - i find it very constraining to rule out songs because they don't follow a strict formula; so if a song flows well with a mix, i will not hesitate to include it because of genre restraints. however, seeing as my base was indeed pop, i decided there was no better way to kick it off than with what i perceive to be the greatest pop song of the 20th century. from there, we run through power pop (big star, cheap trick), 60's pop (the zombies, the beach boys), psychedelic pop (love, the jimi hendrix experience), & the bands & artists they've both borrowed from (the kinks, the who) & influenced (green day, everclear, the murdocks, my bloody valentine, the new amsterdams). i threw in a few unsuspected curve balls for a spiced up crash ending (emmylou harris, david bowie), but overall i think this came out quite well.

recently, i've been trying to restrict my mixes to less than an hour in length, as i feel an overlong mix of mine becomes self-indulgent & tedious, & consequently bogs down the listening experience. i broke that guideline here, & the result is sort of epic in its own sugary-pop kind of way. i originally planned to create two separate mixes: one with the original sources, & one with its offshoots & influences. in the end, i found that the songs all together on one disc complemented each other much better. i'm pretty satisfied with the final product, though if i were to change anything, i might have gone with a different - & less obvious - beach boys song (probably "don't talk [put your head on my shoulder]"). i don't think it hurts the overall theme too much though, & i hope the recipient of this series enjoys this exhaustive set as much as i enjoyed putting it together.

You infer that mixes which exceed your, self-imposed, sixty minute endurance test become "overlong" and "self-indulgent". I realise this is a personal opinion, but I find the concept bizarre. A mix is whatever length it is. If you believe it to be "self-indulgent", that's fine and dandy. Overlong is a purely subjective term, based on your feeling after listening to it. NO mix that is merely written down as a tracklist can be truly reviewed, and subsequently found "overlong". Though it may expose the possibility that the mix was never actually "made", if one was to take the trouble to do the math - heaven forbid. This mix, for example, appears to have 20 tracks - all carefully chosen for the purpose. It certainly looks most enjoyable, and therefore, fails to meet your "overlong" and "self-indulgent" criteria, even as a "written" entity. As to the Beach Boys choice, well, God Only Knows is far and away the better of the two songs you mention - so no problem there then. I personally guarantee that the "recipient" will be as happy as the proverbial pig.As to the absence of upper case letters in any of your outpourings.well.don't get me started.

there is absolutely no need to take offense here, i was speaking strictly of the way i feel about my own mixes. i wasn't insulting your mixes, or anybody else's for that matter, but my own perfectionist & self-conscious view on the mixes i, & i alone, create. (you can check the abundance of positive comments i've left for other mixes which obviously exceed an hour in length.) there's absolutely no need to get picky & choosy with words here. & i believe this is the second time you've attacked my use of lower-case letters, to which i ask: what does it matter? can you read what i write? surely this isn't illegible. this is the internet, not a term paper, & if i don't feel the need to use the shift key every couple seconds, i don't have to. please keep this civil. thanks.

It was not my intention to annoy you; nor to rail about your personal choices. I was aiming for a humorous and friendly rebuke. It's now obvious that I failed miserably. I suppose that's the best way to fail.Of course, none of these things "matter". We're all victims of our own personalities, and mine needs fixing it seems.I still think this mix is very good. Perhaps I should have left it at that. Ho hum.

I have spoken to Nomates on numerous occasions about his obvious problem with lower case letters. I've told him to get over himself, yet the problem remains. I guess it's just an irrational fear. Much like my fear of Siamese Penguins. They terrify me; luckily it's not something I see everday..(phew), The mix is excellent by the way, from start to finish...

Oh crap. That's what I get for putting a mix up here at 3 in the morning, thanks for pointing that out for me.

Thanks for the nice words, too.

And this mix is beautiful. I didn't know Emmylou Harris covered that.
