Comment:
In volume seven I introduce a country-rock 'side loop' to 'Cajun' country-rock (Doug Kershaw and Zachary Richard) and an Appalcachian/mountain connection (Goose Creek) as well as the briefest of introductions to a genre that, in the '70's grew massively popular -- Southern-Rock. Because we're friends, I can admit that I never liked the music of Lynard Skynard, but admit that the song included here was a massive hit.Country Rock: An Idiosyncratic History July/September 2006 Page 7/12
What is Country-Rock anyway? There are four views:
3. Country-Rock starts with folk and bluegrass as a base and adds a rock orientation.
(Douglas Dillard) "My roots are bluegrass, but we don't have any (one) sound in mind, like rock `n roll or country. We were just writing and recording what we did. Basically we just had a lot of fun." (from Desperado, p.15/16)
4. There are some artists who flirted with country-rock:
"(there were) established rock artists who dabbled in the form as a brief diversion in their musical journeys." (from Desperado, p.16/17)
".country-rock is much more a musician's kind of music. A good number of country-rock musicians were well acquainted with country after playing (folk and) bluegrass in their formative years." (from Eight Miles High, p. 200.)
In summary: (J. D. Souther) "I always thought that what I was trying to do .was modern country music. I'd been listening to the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds, Poco, Dillard & Clark. Those guys had listened to Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, and those guys had listened to the Louvin Brothers, the Carter Family, and Jim & Jesse. It all went back to Celtic folk music. The Line always looked unbroken to me." (from Desperado, p.164)

Feedback:
Beautiful series. Southern Fried Rock is tops...minus the Confederate Flag, of course. Now, excuse me while go get dem Duke Boys!!!
Molly Hatchett, Charlie Daniels, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Outlaws... along with Marshall Tucker and the Allman Bros, that was mt concert life from 1978 - 1980. I have all of those guys on vinyl but not a single one on CD, which speaks volumes. Great series.
