Comment:

Volumes 9, 10 and 11 include songs I just did not want to do without. Some cuts are obviously country-rock tunes that should not be ignored. Some tunes push the envelope, I'll admit. Somehow (admittedly tenuously at times) there is (to me) a sonic connection to the widest definition of country-rock in some of these songs that others might argue against. That last statement is meant to explain Brinsley Schwartz -- friends I always hear them as a country rock outfit... not bad for a pub rock band!

Some more thoughts: Origins, Popularity and Evolution:

"Despite the heady atmosphere, healthy diversity, and the groundbreaking achievements of the pioneering country rock artists, few enjoyed wider recognition or financial rewards for their efforts. Very little of this seminal country rock music was commercially successful during its time." (from Desperado, p.16)

"(Country rock) was right in the gray area that didn't fall into any playlist category; neither the rock stations nor the country stations (knew what to do with country rock)." (from Eight Miles High, p 192)

".too country for rock; too rock for country." (from Desperado, p.16)

"By (the) mid-`70s, country-rock had gone mainstream pop as well." (from blogcritics.org)

". as with singer-songwriters, the country-rockers commercial breakthrough was, unfortunately, made possible by smoothing out the edges of the style's earliest, freshest manifestations with blandness." (from Eight Miles High, p 200)

"(Country rock) never did become a huge commercial deal. (It) would take massive infusions of pop to put country rock over in a big way in (the `70s)." (from Eight Miles High, p 199)
