So he says to me make me a mix of some classic rock. Some of my regulars like that stuff. Hmmm... here's a mix of classic rock songs but if you're sitting at the bar listening to this stuff you'd start thinking you were in a parallel universe or something. Familiar but different.

Everyone knows the opener. But not this way. All the hippie special effects are gone and they stretch this bad boy out with same tasty guitar jams.

The Who's Next album was everywhere in 1971. All over the radio, every party, every apartment... but this version will have you scratching your head. It's similar but Townsend does some different things on guitar and again this thing is stretched out.

Another couple of albums everywhere in 1971 was Tumbleweed Connection and Madman Across The Water. The strings on that title track made the song so intense but few people heard the original version of the song without the strings. It came out recently as a bonus cut and what a hard guitar rock song that turned out to be. So why the strings?

The deluxe CD version of Blind Faith includes this cool electric guitar version of that acoustic classic. Clapton plays some jammin' guitar. So which is better? The acoustic guitar or the electric guitar? Hard to say. They both sound pretty good on this song. Just different.

Speaking of jammin' guitar. Hendrix going nuts on this long expanded jam from Axis that came out on the box set. Nice.

Can't have a classic rock mix without getting the Led out. One of my favorite LZ tunes. Live and with Jimmy Page doing that long, long jam.

And then there's Rod the Mod and the Boys getting wild and sloppy at the BBC with an old Temptations song. Great fun. Got that drum solo thing going too.

Also at the BBC. The Thin White Duke doing a really hot jam on that classic Lou Reed song. Some very nice guitar going on there too. I'm almost ready to say I like this version better than the original.

Neil Young doing some slashing guitar from Live Rust. Always great to hear.

The Pixies surprisingly faithfully covering Neil and a couple of more covers. Ending with a sort of tribute to the Kinks. And why not.

So I wonder what those guys at the bar will think of this twisted take on their classics.
