Comment:

personally, i'm not too sure what to think about this one. it came together - as a gift for a friend's birthday - from outtakes from the fourth volume of the get fresh flow, which i'm currently assembling. so this will, indelibly, in my eyes be an inferior version of my forthcoming mix. however, some of you may disagree, as there are enough differences abound to create a separate, if similar, atmosphere.

i do feel the need to defend some of my choices here though, as i'm sure plenty of you may turn your noses up at a few of the songs. if you haven't heard john mayer's new album, you should probably just bite your tongue right now - he has thrown a curve ball very little of us (excluding me) were expecting, even with all the hendrix & ray charles & marvin gaye covers he's been playing, & all the eric clapton & buddy guy appearances he's made. while "your body is a wonderland" has earned him alot of dreck from people who otherwise know better (& i will freely admit that song is fluff-pop garbage), the man is seriously talented & growing more as an artist with every step he takes - skeptics should check out his new album before dishing any dirt. weezer, i've noticed, have ended up on quite a few people's shitlist, & while i admit rivers cuomo isn't the genius many peg him to be, they churned out, in my opinion, some of the best power pop of the 90's. no, maybe not up there with teenage fanclub or matthew sweet, but enough for some consistent releases. the doors seem to be getting on many a rock snob's bad side nowadays as well, & while i can't rightfully defend all of their work, most of their debut & alot of their releases afterwards contain some great (if a bit pretentious & self-indulgent) psychedelic pop.

i also continue my streak here of ending my mixes with an epic closer, which seems to be becoming a trademark of mine - i love to place 7+ minute songs either right at the end, or within the last few tracks. the lou reed song is the monster 10 minute live version from his rock 'n' roll animal album. the title is taken from the second neil young track.

Interesting writeup. If one were seeking rock snobs, would AOTM be a place to look?

your notes would have been stronger if you excluded the
"i do feel the need to defend" line. you've created a very fine mix which can defend itself. thanks!

No need to be defensive, the proof is in the music. Love the Talking Heads track.

awesome!

There is a Hank Williams song, covered by Lowell George called LONESOME WHISTLE, and a Zevon tune NIGHTIME AT THE SWITCHING YARD that fit the title...

nicely done

pinkerton is an outstanding album. just because an artist "sells out" doesn't mean we have to hate the stuff they used to do. fantastic pick from r.e.m. as well - great job! thanks for your kind words as well...

Nah. I like the outtakes mix concept. It's a good thing to have around.

i do the same thing with my closing tracks too. it just feels more solid that way. i mean, who would put "the past is a grotesque animal" or something of the like at the begi nning of a mix?
