Sin T
Comment:
Started off as a celtic folk mix, then Alex posted a long song mix so I decided to kill two birds with one stone and widen the parameters. N.B Sin E is gaelic for 'Thats it' 1 & 2 feature the harp as an alternative to lead guitar as it were and if you havent heard the new Joanna Newsom then you need to rectify that, extraordinary. No cover art for this one as the songs paint all the pictures you need... Thats it, I'm pontificating but with good reason, it's all good, sin T.... My best mix yet? no, the one I'm most passionate about? Absolutely. Thanks to my good friend Markus for the opener.
Feedback:
Chock full o' classics, particularly the Joanna Newsom (what an album!), Tom Waits, Neil Young, Pogues, Ali Roberts and Blue Nile tracks.
great lookin' mix, i love the tom waits & i absolutely adore that neil young song...
That's probably the best Joanna Newsom and Neil Young songs ever you got here, so not bad! I'm curious about the rest now.
To get the petty complaints out of the way first: I remain on the fence about Joanna Newsom (although it's getting increasingly lonely up here, especially as I'm not on the same fence as the "ugh, her voice!" people), and I am just not able to see past the racist stereotyping in "Fatal Flower Garden" (though the song is undeniably beautiful, so I propose that someone comes up with new lyrics). That said, the rest of the mix is obviously flawless, and it holds together really really well, so when it all comes down, this is still a top mix.
TrTs magnifique, you've nailed one of my all time fave tunes with that 'Shakey' tune.
I like.
Wonderful stuff! I love Fhir a' Bhata in just about every form and the new Joanna Newsom is indeed wonderful. You really nailed it with the Tom Waits and the fantastic Alasdair Roberts too.
Half way through the Gavin Friday track and had to comment. This is wonderful. Lovely opener. And yes, I'm with you on Joanna Newsom. The current track playing is marvellous. Heading into known territory soon with the fine Waits-Pogues stretch. Yes, I can see I'm going to enjoy this...
I have, this very week, been listening to several BarryDali mixes. The Solemn Eyed, is a masterpiece -- seemingly inspired by one of my favourite poems; there are numerous other fine examples of the mixers art to be found within Mr. Dali's portfolio. Perhaps this is my point - at last!- if we consider these things as "art", then this mix sees Barry in his "Vermeer" persona; returning to a mood and theme and adding further depth and beauty. The "controversy" surrounding "Fatal Flower Garden" (a song, ostensibly created almost 800 years ago) seems incongruous now. The original perpetrator having been replaced by a "gypsy" - shock, horror! I am more surprised that it's Gavin Friday who performs this interpretation. I was unaware of this side of him - and I like it. I fact, I like the whole mix. It takes me to a place I feel I know so well - of course this place does not exist - yet it is there, down a tree-lined path and through an old, rickety, wooden gate, beyond a misty veil which calls to me with siren-like insistence. There are times when I yearn for this place, though I fear what I might find there. This mix, unlocks that gate, that I may visit. Those little hairs at the back of my neck may bristle as I pass through, but there is also a smile forming somewhere deep within. It's a smile of familiarity - a sense of belonging. I have no explanation for this. It just is.There's also a marvellous cover of "Shelter From The Storm" by Steve Adey and The Pogues seminal version of "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" - a personal favourite. This is a beautiful mix. Barry knows how to create a mood and sustain it. This is a musical well that, at least in Barry's case, seems bottomless. "That's it" indeed.
Ah, I certainly wasn't trying to spark a "controversy" about "Fatal Flower Garden" (and I'll spare you my reasoning on why the fact that it's 800 years old makes it worse rather than better, as well as my own biographical reasons on why I care so much that I couldn't help commenting on it), I was just boldly stating that this'll always keeping from enjoying that song. I do agree that it fits in perfectly here mood-wise, as does everything else on this mix. So, fantastic mix, no need for controversy as far as I'm concerned.
Another masterpiece Barry. The 5-7 stretch is stunning.
This is beyond lovely.
Great stuff. I didn't get the FFG controversy, but a little web search solved that.
By the way, what is a Celtic? Is that like what we call a Cherokee? Ha, ha. Bail = Dhia ort, Barry.

Gave this a listen over the weekend and loved it. Amazing flow.
The votes are in and the projections state loudly this is a winner. I am looking forward to giving your passion a spin, sir.
Great looking mix here Barrydali, going by the half I know. Passion counts. (A Celtic is a Man. Utd. beater, that's what.)
Oh valis, you wouldn't let it lie...
