Comment:
The second in the series of challenges? this time with abangaku (hopefully he'll set up the link). As usual we chose the artists between us & as abangaku instigated the mix it was left to him to put them in running order?
As before- an interesting & exciting project, even if it simply throws you into areas/artists/combinations you would have normally never thought of by yourself?
I think this is a first for me, but if anybody can be bothered/is interested? here are some notes about the tunes I made along the way-
1. not sure I can describe how great this tune is? a mix of funky/folk/psyche/rock blissniss, it just gets better & better with each play. bow down davendra barnhart.
2. i'm hardly ever sure of my favourite cohen album, but I often return to the first, & if I do I can't ever find a weak track, in fact its difficult to spot a weak track from the first four or five albums- one hand on my suicide & one hand on the road?
3. folk/ hip hop, or is that trip hop? my favourite sinead outing.
4. some funky percussive chicano rock !
5.great lyrics "all doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes" ?............(though I would'nt fancy havin a go at krispy kreme !)
6. it took me a long time to find any miles that I really connected to, & when I did (on the corner)i read somewhere that's its not really an area where a lot of jazz people like? well that's fine, they can have he's straight jazz stuff, & I'll have he's funky weird shit!
7.its often said (& I tend to agree) that its difficult to find a cover thats as good as the original? Well here's a man that I think has been the exception to the rule on several occasions, (esp in recent years). though oddly enough, not neccesarilly on this particuarlar tune, but like the guy at the end of the take says, I think it was.... OK.
8. when it comes to R.C theres just so much choice of great tunes. I just picked this cos it strolls along nicely & felt good for the mix.
9. depeche mode. A really underrated modern songwriter. one of my favourite tunes from my favourite album.
10. back with the twisted funky rock, electric!
11. without question, best indie rock band of the last ten years.
12. tough choice between old & new? I like this as its got a similar vibe to the sinead tune, kinda funky folky trip hop.
13. the velvets, what can i say about the velvets? I often find it difficult to choose between them & the beatles for the most influential band ever? (one went overground, whilst the other went, well, underground!)
14. there seem to be at least a few different takes & approaches to psychadelia/trippiness? If I was put on the spot, this may well be my favourite psychedelic/trippy tune?
15. just recently 'discovered, & straight in at No.1!!!!!
16. not really a favourite van tune, but it seemed to finish off the album nicely.
Feedback:
Hi guys - well this looks excellent, and great liner notes too. Paul - I've just remembered I still owe you a CD - I'm a bad, forgetful-type person... oops...
Great work! I'm with you on the Beatles/Velvets thing, 2 bands who made great music and quit at exactly the right time (Squeeze is Velvets in name only).
Here's the link to my mix as requested... when i have more time and i've listened to this some more i'll write a suitably verbose comment... see ya until then.
Outstanding! Great notes, too.
