Covering Old Ground
Comment:
End of year round up time and I wanted to do something a teeny bit different so I gathered my favourite cover versions of the year (granted one or two might have been originally released at the tail end of 2005) Although this year wasn't to my mind an especially wonderful year for music it did happen to throw up some lovely versions of a few of my favourite songs of all time which I have included in this mix. These interpretations are pretty much all done in an acoustic laid back style and it makes for a pretty nice chilled listen. Surely there is nobody on the board who doesnt know and like at least 3 of the originals of these songs and I'm even more certain there are several of you who know every single one. Enjoy and happy holidays to everybody.Feedback:
Got me salivating here Barry, & have to admit I have nowt from this here gathering!
Cool idea. I heard the DeVotchKa cover, which is fantastic, and look forward hearing the rest.
Yousendit are criminals and my link wont work unless I give them money, that wont be happening so I'll try sendspace and post a new link soon. Sorry guys.
Unsurprisingly enough, this looks most excellent - love all the versions that I've heard (for the record, that's the Adey, Witmer and Boy Omega tracks), and the rest of it looks equally great. Looking forward to hearing this - at least this'll solve my dilemma of having been curious about that version of "Famous Blue Raincoat" for a while, yet scared to listen to it because well, that song's perfect already.
I know none of the versions you proudly display here. Most of the songs I know, although I don't think I've heard Fade To Black. I've heard Fade To Grey though, will that do? Looking forward to hearing this immensely...
yep, i know pretty much all of the originals & i'm damn interested in hearing the cover versions. looks like a really great mix barry boy, i'll try & check this one out whenever you get a working link up. cheers, & happy holidays bud
New Working Link I hope
looking forward to the listen, Barry. I, too, know many of the originals but not these versions. and I love The Czars, but certainly haven't heard them covering Patsy Cline before.
According to yousendit, File sender has exceeded his or her download limit. There is no question why that would be - this looks great.
To be honest with you, I'm not a big fan of any of the artists here that I know, but I'm sure you've picked worthy covers (knowing your fine taste in tunes).
This looks very good indeed.I know a fair number of the songs and none of these particular versions. I do know The Czars version of Song To The Siren which I approached thinking what's the point? There are already two great versions, and was blown away by it's brilliance. I will give this a listen as soon as I get a chance.
I gazed at this tracklist, with tremulous unease. I downloaded and turned me old ears in tentative fashion mixward... I need not of worried. It's a Barrydali for Christ's sake! Thoroughly enjoyable and filled with all the requisite quirks one could ask for. Go on with your bad self, Barry. You still da man!
Mixward Ho! Afraid I am commenting without a listen here, but it looks damn interesting, to say the least. Do have a look at the 'Copy, Right?' blog for some consistently fun/interesting covers.
oh yes! I love covers, and I love obscure covers the best!
I believe I shall enjoy... I am w/ LSBoys....
unsurprisingly barry I know zilch but I know the majority of the originals which I suspect would make a good mix in itself.
I finally listened to this and really enjoyed it. Thanks for putting it together, and putting it out there.
Nice! And a great spin on the end-of-the-year mix. Plus, a lot of fantastic takes on songs here, and some I never even knew existed. Really like the Josh Ritter and Kind Of Like Spitting. Well done.
this is one of my favorites of yours, Barry. and I'm not just saying that 'cause you said nice things on my new mix either. this is gorgeous! 1/3/5/11/12/17 are the ones I put special marks next to. have yourself a merry little Christmas, and looking forward to the Barrydali mixes of '07.
Happy Holidays Barry.
