Comment:

first of all, i'd like to wish a very happy new year to AOTMers everywhere -- it seems everybody is slowly creeping back to the site, so i hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.

anyhow, onto the mix: this is an idea that i've had kicking around & taken on & off the backburner for some months now. the concept is basically a mix of trashy dance music according to someone who doesn't like dance music; according to someone who was raised on british invasion, merseybeat, 60's pop, soul & r&b, & 70's punk & hard rock. above all, songs were used to give it that junky, whimsical, free-flowing, trashy sound -- which turned out well, i think: everytime you think you're going to hit a rut, you get jerked into a new direction with a different genre that builds in intensity until it explodes into the next one.

for a mix with such a short number of songs, it may draw some question marks as to why it took so long: the last month's holiday commotion notwithstanding, i kept getting frustrated with it & giving up & putting it aside, then coming back after a week or so to continue work for a variety of reasons. one was that many of these songs are incredibly long & have various different mixes, so the question came about which mixes to use, which versions, which lengths, etc. now i wanted this to be dancey, but i didn't want it to be too dancey, so i tried to scale back on too many "dance remixes" (such as the 8-minute 12" version of "miss you," & the 7-minute 12" remix of "john, i'm only dancing") -- i wanted it to sound equally as trashy, if not moreso. plus, with such long songs it was inevitable that many, many quality songs had to be cut; & with a project like this that i considered my baby, that i was incredibly excited about, i had to keep taking breaks before becoming too frustrated with the increasingly difficult decisions of which songs & which mixes to use. fortunately enough, it was well worth it, as this happens to be one of my personal favorite mixes i've yet assembled; however, be on the look out for a volume two in the coming months.

enough of all that jive though, let's get to dancing.

p.s. very, very special thanks to jonpoi for the wonderful cover art!

That cover art is kinda creeping me out (I can't believe I'm the first to say this), but this is a fantastic mix. It takes a lot to get me on the dance floor, but almost everything here (esp 1 and 5-11) would do so.

This is a marvel. A musical and visual delight. Now isn't that the very essence of a good mix. Well yes, yes it is.

Extremely guiltily-made late comment, here: I've had this for absolutely ages! Thank you so much for sending this - I've been enjoying it immensely. Some great classics, and you have the thumbs up from flatmates here at Casa Vu as well. Vielen Dank!
