Comment:
Well, it's January and time for lots of snow in Upstate NY and lots of AOTM statistics. The snow is MIA, but there's an avalanche of 2006 stats. Highlights this year: Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake drop out of the top 20 (finally!), Nico is back in with the oldest recording, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" was released eight years too early, all 20 are available on iTMS, there's a lot of white people!
See also the mixes from 2005 & 2004.
The top twenty are listed below with the 2005 positions in parenthesis.
1. ( 2) POSTAL SERVICE: Such Great Heights
2. ( -) GNARLS BARKLEY: Crazy
3. (216) DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE: I Will Follow You Into The Dark
4. ( 15) FEIST: Mushaboom
5. ( 5) MODEST MOUSE: Float On
6. ( 9) ARCADE FIRE: Rebellion (lies)
6. ( 31) SPOON: I Turn My Camera On
8. ( 30) NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL: Holland 1945
9. ( 27) NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL: In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
9. ( 7) JOY DIVISION: Love Will Tear Us Apart
9. (272) DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE: Soul Meets Body
12. ( 3) BRIGHT EYES: First Day Of My Life
12. ( 1) SHINS: New Slang
12. ( 61) NICO: These Days
15. ( -) CAT POWER: The Greatest
16. (574) BOY LEAST LIKELY TO: Be Gentle With Me
16. ( -) RACONTEURS: Steady As She Goes
18. ( 81) SUFJAN STEVENS: Chicago
19. ( 4) YEAH YEAH YEAHS: Maps
19. ( 7) FROU FROU: Let Go
Keep rockin' in '07!

Feedback:
this is great work man, I'm only guilty to have used 2,15 and 16
i am obviously out of step with the times as i used none of these popular tunes. thanks for the stats!
Fascinating list. Especially noticeable is the boy-least-likely-to-clap- your-hands-say-yeah-yeah -yeah trend. If this continues band names will soon have plots.
The lists are fascinating, thanks. F* Billboard, this is the Real Top 1000.
I thank all deities and their lesser entourages that you exist. Great work, great statistics, great presentation and great heavens! you're a bloody marvel.I am as out of step as mahdishain; none these songs appeared on any of my mixes. Mind you, as your excellent statistics show, I was hardly Mr. Prolific.
Over the past couple of years, I've gotten to really look forward to seeing this mix and those stats. Thanks a lot for doing this. Great fun.
This is certainly interesting.
Great work, how does it sound as a mix?
I love statistics. you've done some great work here, thanks for taking the time. Death Cab For Cutie, bleckh, but glad to see Joy Division still holding strong.
Once again merci beaucoup for the time & effort exerted. Think I used 8 & 20 last year.
i love the aotm yearly stats. love love love love love. so much fun. awesome.
I don't know know how you do it, Lenny but I'm sure glad you do! Thanks from me. Hugely intersting round up.
I used three tracks here throughout the year ( 2,4 & 13 ) but I am a fan of the top song..

Thanks for doing this, it's fascinating. I scanned the top 1000 song list for songs I used in one of my mixes (and found only one.) While doing so I noticed this line: 858. 10 BRIGHT EYES: The First Day Of My Life This probably means that Bright Eyes's song was used 51 times instead of 41 times, which would bring the song up to third place (in a tie with the Death Cab for Cutie song). Not that it matters much to me, but I thought I should bring it up since I noticed it.
Very interesting statistics, thanks for compiling them!
Could we put a moratorium on that Postal Service track though? Say, 30 years? That'd be good.

Always great to see these. I contributed to Cat Power (and Sufjan in 2005)...
many thanx!
Always a fun exercise. I've used about 1/3 of the Top 20 on mixes, though ("New Slang" aside) not in the past year or so. But, hey, if "Holland 1945" continues to find its way onto hundreds of mixes, the world will be a better place -- no two ways about it.
Bravo Saaf!!! Boggling work here & always appreciated! Thanks for doing it.
Okay, so we AOTMers aren't the most ethnically diverse bunch when it comes to music, but we still have pretty good taste. Sad to see that Black Oak Arkansas once again missed the cut. Anyways, I'm glad that you continue to do this for us, as I think you're the only one around here that has the knowledge to compute these stats. A belated thank you!!
So cool! Love this year-end wrap up. You do such amazing work. It is MUCH appreciated!!!!
Brilliant. Great piece of meta-mix analysis.
A pity that the selection is a bit of bog-standard indie-pop, overall - good stuff, but a bit samey after awhile.

Thanks for the great work, and the mix looks pretty damn good as well!
Wow, once again, thanks for this annual treat.
