Comment:

This tape wasn't nearly long enough to accomodate all my favorites. In retrospect, I probably would have done it a bit differently. "I Love You," for instance, was thrown on because it fit perfectly at the end of side one. None of the "closet mixes" of the third album are included, because I find the regular album mix to be vastly superior (even though Lou Reed obviously preferred the closet mixes). Though I did include the "restored" versions of "Sweet Jane" and "New Age," because I quite enjoy the little bits they put back in, particularly on "Sweet Jane," which now seems to build to a natural climax at the end. (Though it could be argued that this kind of thinking is the same madness that George Lucas indulged in with his "special editions" of "Star Wars"). "Satellite of Love" and "Ocean" are the versions featured on the "Peel Slowly And See" box, though I probably like the V.U. version of "Ocean" better (I just didn't have access to it). Yes, there's a lot missing here, but it's a good introduction to one of the most influential bands of all time...arguably *the* first "alternative" band.

Wow! Great mix! You should make a sequel of everything you couldn't fit. Like "Sister Ray," "Real Good Time Together," "I'll Be your Mirror," . . .

"Mr. Rain" would have been nice too. Basically what i plan on doing is making a 2CD version with a bunch of other stuff...thogu hweh nyou think about it, two CDs could almost fit all four of their albums.

Wow, sorry for the typos there.

Nice mix. I woulda picked some different VU shit, but that's why this website is here, que no? And besides...you really can't go wrong with any VU.

Good job.

And I absolutely LOVE your screenname.

I've been pursuing a similar project in my mind and you have definitely raised the bar. I don't see any obvious oversights, though I might push for "I'll Be Your Mirror."

NOOOO!!!! You only put two tunes from White Light / White Heat, undenyably the best VU album! But sod it, i love every damn tune they ever wrote and 23 tunes by one of the greatest bands /cannot/ be bad! I'da loved more WL/WH, but i know the feeling ya get when there's so much you have to cover (and asking you to put on a 17 minute Sister Ray might've been a bit much!). Class.

Azathoth...WL/WH is definitely a bold choice for favorite VU album. Great album...way ahead of its time. But my personal fave is the third record. Also, I should point out I was making this for a friend who had never heard any VU, so I was trying to make it like a sort of primer. If I was going to include another track from WL/WH it would have been Lady Godiva's Operation. The Gift is great too, but a little too esoteric for a starter kit.

Incidentally, the third album is *by far* my fave VU record, as well. Feel free to check out my "Free to find another illusion" set.
