Comment:

Well, I've been away for a while. Checking in and commenting, but not making compilations. Well, it's cold, and icy, and I have kept accruing CDs, so it's time I guess. This mix is just from recent additions to the collection. a little of this and a little of that.

Regina Spektor (1), (2) and (19) was discovered on a news show. Like the way she uses her voice. The first two from an early album and the latter is getting some air play.

The Smithereens (3) and (4) did a lovingly created cover of the first (in the US) Beatles album. Some covers explore new territory. Some lovingly recreate what was already there. They do every song in the `right' order and stay scrupulously faithful to the original.

I found a nicely remastered Clapton collection (5) and (17). There's always room for Slow Hand Clap ton.

America is back (6) (7) (love `em or hate `em) with a two disc CD. One disc with new stuff (with a lot of instrumental and production help from one of the Fountains of Wayne) and one a live concert of their hits.

Speaking of FofW, "Hem" covers one of their oh so tasty tunes (8). You have heard Hem, they provide the music for a commercial about `passing on nice'. They are worth a listen!

(9) A nice live version from a reel fun group.

OK, Levon Helms has had some ups and downs after The Band. He lost his home and studio in a fire, yet the tapes of many performances were saved. This (10) is from a concert in the 70's. Also note that he has very intimate concerts in his (new) studio in Woodstock NY. There are a couple DVDs and `Google' `Levon Helms Midnight Rambles' for more information.

I have always liked John Hiatt. This cut (11) is from a very hard to find early concert.

Ran across a tasty collection of Paul Carack. (12) and (13). Sure like most everything he does.

Blue Angel (14) and (15) is an obscure one album group. If there is any fame at all it's that their lead singer is Cyndi Lauper, and she sure shows that she's got a set of pipes!

(16) Deacon Blue is fine, fine, superfine! Robert Gordon is on the edge of country, and he does a fine cover here (18) of a Marshall Crenshaw tune. (20) is the theme song from an absolutely favorite TV show (Pete & Pete, if you must know).

"All This and World War II" was an obscure movie with the soundtrack made up of Beatles songs done by other artists. It's just been re-released on "Hip-O Select". (21) is from this two disc album.

Capital has just released the "US" version of early Beatles albums. I grew up with them, and it's good to rediscover these (less good, admittedly) versions, especially in mono! (22), (23) and (24 are from the album "Help".

(25) and (26) are a couple acappella tunes. I have been searching for the latter done by The Persuasions, but that record has not yet been released on CD.

Interesting stuff, Seeing alot of Regina Spektor on AotM lately and Blue Angel definitely looks intriguing (always loved Cyndi's pipes.) Moght have to explore both. Not sold on the Smithereens Beatles covers yet.

Definitely some good "stuff" here. I'll have to check out the ones I'm not familiar with. I've been looking for a CD of that Persuasions LD, "We Still Ain't Got No Band," after hearing Good Old Acappela played on a College radio station many years ago. I've finally broken down and ordered an LP to convert myself. I'll send you a copy when I've completed the process.

Aha, Stuff. My most over used title when it comes to mixes. I reckon I've got two dozen 'Stuff' mixes dotted about. And this? Full of great 'Stuff'. Love your America & Regina picks....

Great mix as always! I especially love the Blue Angel tracks and the Smithereens covers of Beatles songs. I was also intrigued by the last track because one of my favorite Acapella groups (The Coats) has a different version of that song.
