From Union Square to Hoboken, a swath of destruction.Feedback:
Two of my favorite bands; nice to see 'em intertwined like this. Of course, in all fairness, it's important to point out that YLT have moved far beyond being a simply VU imitator. Ira may wear his influences on his sleeve, but they've taken the VU blueprint (brilliantly set forth over a mere 4 proper albums) and expanded it in every direction. With more albums to experiment with, YLT have managed to come up with prettier songs (particularly with Georgia's vocals), more insane guitar workouts, and catchier pop songs.
They're two of my favorite bands as well, Yo La Tengo most especially. To me YLT even at their most Velvetsy (as on parts of May I Sing With Me) weren't imitators, I get a sense from YLT of what made the Velvets great, fondly recollected from another place by a band working on its own terms. In choosing songs to juxtapose, I didn't include much from YLT after "I Can Heart the Heart..." ('96) because after that, the clear sonic analogies don't hold. But I had to include "Black Flowers", a great homage to John Cale from YLT's latest.
Ah, a vs. mix, and a very interesting one as well :) Nice work!
