Lately I've been discovering Weller's solo work and revisiting The Jam and The Style Council. I have mixed feelings about Weller: he is and always has been a musician of consummate taste and skill who draws upon musical sources I like in ways that sound good to me, but I fall short of being a fan, mainly because Weller's lyrics often strike me as distractingly bad and his "frontman persona" (or lack thereof) off-putting. But not always, and here's a disc of tracks I consider great and in some cases downright life-affirming, with special emphasis on The Style Council at their groovy, breezy, eclectic, politicized best. Comments on two of the songs: I think the version of "The Lodgers" from "Our Favorite Shop" is much better (like, night & day) than the version released as a single. Also, "Right Underneath It" (outtake from Weller's "Fly On The Wall" B-sides/rarities set) is a real hidden gem: four minutes of crunchy, anthemic, stirring guitar rock, one of his very best IMO.Feedback:
you should come to Seattle and dig around in some of the used record stores. someone here dumped their entire Style Council record collection, and I keep finding large chunks of it in every record store I visit. I swear there's about 14 tons of used Style Council vinyl in this town as I type this. like, right now this minute.

I really am sitting here, fuming and trying to avoid stomping my feet in impotent rage at you, Yaminon!About a month ago, I drug out my copy of In The City, and sat through it (okay, pogo'd around the house) and thought, I really should get off my lazy arse and put together a mix of ...Paul Weller.So, here I sit, early AM, staring... I don't feel the same as you about a lot of the things you said (hey, the internet is the last bastion of free speech, so speak your mind!) but I have to admit some of your choices have been living on my MP3 player for quite a while now.Track # 21 is an all time fave of mine, and I remember playing it once for a friend who asked if it was Elvis Costello...I may (MAY???) have to get off that lazy appendege of fat and respond... Should I take leave of my senses, I can tell you certain tracks would be repeated, like the aforementioned 21, as well as 8, 22, and 23.
And of course, I have no one to blame but myself for putting it off, so feel free to point and mock...

I have mixed feelings about having mixed feelings about Weller, I think "In the City" is magnificent and my not including "Non-Stop Dancing" and "Sounds From the Street" (two more favorites from that album) is disgraceful, disgraceful I say...
