Comment:
Richard Thompson is my hero and I'm an aspiring fanatic of his (but the word fanatic is overused and I really have to work to get all those records before I'll be a "fanatic" in the truest sense), having gotten heavily into his music in the last year and just having seen him about three weeks ago. I wanted to make a mix to give to two people I know who have no idea who this man is except for someone I ramble on about. This is only an inital draft and not at all finalized. The reason a lot of these are not the studio versions is that I still have tons of R.T. and Fairport albums to buy, and I pulled most of this off of the limited albums I have and the fabulous 5-disc box set full of alternate takes and rarities. I don't think it's really possible to do in one disc, but I wanted to provide a brief overview of the many sides of this man's music. That meant perhaps a Fairport song or two, some Richard & Linda, some solo stuff, acoustic, rocking electric stuff, originals, covers (since his covers are so good), and a bit of the humorous stuff he does in addition to his serious and quite brilliant work (it's all great IMO). I am looking for feedback and also wondering if there are any red flags that may be apparent in giving this to a platonic female friend (yes the same subject of previous mixes). Yes, I am not opposed to sending a few signals her way, but in the process I wish to avoid an unfortunate outcome. Suggestions about the songs, artist, brilliance of R.T., or my ulterior motives are welcome!!!! And I know I am totally immature - I never matured except for with a guitar in my hands :-)Feedback:
Richard Thompson is a genius, Danny & Linda are no slouches either, & Ray Kane is a national treasure. Quite an assortment!
I'll cast a vote for "Cooksferry Queen" and "Sights and Sounds of London Town" from Mock Tudor, one of his more underrated albums.
Oh crap...Cooksferry Queen was in the giant list and I got distracted...that must go in there!!!! Thanks for reminding me. I love Mock Tudor.
"Dear Janet Jackson" is a scream.
I always wanted to like this guy more, especially after he did that "1000 Years of Popular Music" album. Maybe I just need to delve deeper (I only know a handful of his stuff). Still, I have great respect for him, so I'm sure this mix is pure gold
i feel so good, now that i am dead, read about love, shane and dixie, did she jump or was she pushed, wall of death, crawl back (under my stone), unihabited man, gypsie love songs. add in walking on a wire, 1952 vincent black lightning, i misunderstood, and beeswing from your mix and i think i just made my own. you are right about genius and you are right about one disc not being enough. good luck.
Dude I just innocently wound up going to the record store this afternoon and couldn't resist picking up Rumor and Sigh, so maybe Read About Love and/or I Feel So Good will have to go on there. I wanted to get Hand Of Kindness too, but all things in time. Good thing I don't have a gf and can spend money on albums that won't dump me and leave me unfulfilled. This guy is seriously one of the best ever. Thanks for the suggestions!
I got no call to argue... (though I feel he was better balanced when Linda was around)
