Comment:

i have to admit, i'm not usually one for single artist mixes -- the only time i put them together is when i'm trying to introduce a friend to a band or artist i like. other than that, i just don't see the point in putting together a mix for an artist when, if i like them enough, i'll always choose listening to their albums over individual songs. that being said, i was having a conversation with a friend of mine over our favorite dylan albums & songs, & it came up that i seem to have a "type" of dylan song that i gravitate towards (take a wild guess which kind). with that in mind, i set off to make myself a single disc mix of my absolute favorite dylan songs, & i have to say that i'm pretty satisfied with the result.

other songs considered: "with god on our side," "it ain't me babe," "farewell, angelina," "if you gotta go, go now (or else you got to stay all night)," "she belongs to me," "gates of eden," "mr. tambourine man," "tombstone blues," "desolation row," "can you please crawl out your window?," "she's your lover now," "fourth time around," "i'll be your baby tonight," "sara." it also really hurt that i wasn't able to include anything off of the basement tapes; however the performances & the loose, ragged & warm spirit on that album is what makes it a great listen to me, as opposed to individual songs.

revision, 12/21/2007: as of this revision, i removed "mr. tambourine man," "fourth time around" & "just like tom thumb's blues," & the standard studio versions of "visions of johanna" & "you're a big girl now"; they were replaced by the new york version of "you're a big girl now" & the bootleg vol. 4 versions of "like a rolling stone" (perhaps the greatest moment in the history of pop music) & "visions of johanna."

Our taste in Dylan is stunningly similar. I did a four-disc set a few years ago and the following are on the first disc: tracks 1, 3-6, 9, 11, and 14. Tracks 10 and 12 were almost on the first disc. And, lastly, I'm with you on most of your alternates: "Farewell, Angelina," "She Belongs to Me," "It's All Over Now...," "She's Your Lover Now" and "Sara" all made disc 1 of my collection. :-) In short, great work.

My opinion of Dylan has been documented aplenty before now. Try as I might (& believe me I've tried) I just don't get him/it? Hoping you don't hold it against me Anthony, as I'm sure Dylan heads will love this mix.

Very Nice. My fave Dylan track is I'll Keep It With Mine, which is represented here, so two thumbs up. But as Mark stated ( if you're a fan Cliff! ) you can't go wrong with a BD mix.

Of course it's possible to go wrong with a Dylan mix! Not including "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" would be a sure-fire way to go wrong. As would be not including several of the other songs on here. I'd better not think about all the possibilities of going wrong with a focus on his 80s output... But of course, you didn't do any of that, Anthony. Looks great!

My fave Bob track is 'Love Minus Zero' I still can't believe how beautiful that is! 'Visions of Johanna' as well - gem, absolutely a gem. The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face...
