Comment:
December 22 - January 20Tenth Sign of the Zodiac - Earth, CardinalWe find ouselves on the earthly plane, gazing with ambition at a forbidding mountain rising in the middle-distance. The task of Capricorn: to make the summit, conquering the cross of earth they daily bear. The warm, down-beat drums of Max Roach set us off on our journey, wandering through the open plains, seeking our spiritual Father. He is the earth in its Saturnine aspect - an impressive, remote and endless figure, bordering us on all sides, especially figured by the mountain lying ahead, whose ascent is aided by Capricorn's huge reserves of drive and concentration. We take out first stumbling steps toward the peak... but many Capricornians only begin to tackle this mountain later in life; Scriabin's early etude boils with the tragic fury of the thwarted youthful Capricornian spirit.Capricorns are old souls, who seem to have experienced what the world has to offer many times over; one theory is that the sign is chosen by the soul as the last earthly incarnation, as being the hardest test. Similarly to Cancer, the Sea-Goat inhabits both land and water, suggesting a link to Neptune, the Father of the Sea. Like Cancer, the task of rebirth is a secret preoccupation of many born under the sign. Yet Capricorn's rebirth comes about through an appeal not to the Mother, but to the Father: through the difficult acceptance of His rule, they become father to themselves, reborn in His Word and Glory.Still, any Capricorn will tell you all this mountain/father stuff is fine, but they've got work to do, places to go, something real, you know? Bound to the earthy plane all their lives, their real growth and achivement lies in expressing the limitations of the form: the world-weary tones of young Janis Joplin, the gravelly reflections of Marianne Faithfull. Capricorn's 're-birth' occurs only on the terms of life as it is, day-to-day.It is this duality of the sign: a coveted but fierce idealism and esoteric experience of the Waters of Life twinned with a dry, realistic outlook and complete groundedness which gives Capricorn it's power to achieve. The task, conquering the mountain of worldly existence, redeeming the child within, being reborn as ruler of themselves, is impossible, yet in it's endless striving Capricorn communicates perhaps more eloquently than any other sign what life is like on this planet. For Capricorn, the final achievement is the path they have followed, the living itself, the original Gift.
