Comment:
August 23 - September 22Sixth Sign of the Zodiac - Earth, MutableThe original virgin, Virgo has come to be known as one of the less exciting signs of the Zodiac, given to fussiness, pedantry and to generally spoiling the othersigns' fun; looking more closely however at the keyword of Virgo reveals a much more vital and mysterious character...'Virgin' in its ancient usage did not carry the fixed meaning it has today; in the broadest sense it simply meant 'unmarried'. A girl could therefore be known to man and yet be simultaneously pure, inwardly intact. The female devotees of many goddesses were often holy prostitutes, a contradiction in terms only when viewed from the structure of modern society. It is this paradox of chaste/unchaste, pure/sullied, virgin/whore which lies at the heart of the Virgoan psyche, coupled with auxillary contradictions such as order vs chaos, restraint vs abandonment and morality vs amorality. The task of Virgo is to make a oneness out of mutually exclusive terms. No wonder the sign is often considered 'neurotic'.Hildegaard von Bingen's sensually spiritual chant welcomes us into the soul of Virgo, where we encounter Suzanne supine and untouchable on a riverbank. The purity of Pachabel's much used canon collides with Cage's vehemently earthy celebration of Virgo in the mask of Demeter, and so forth. Eventually we realise that Virgo is itself the earth, at once ransacked raped and pillaged and yet ever renewed, ever pure. Virgos need often to be alone; they cannot take behavioural cues from society but can only listen down into the inner moral demand, which is that of the earth's. Virgo offers the dream of immortal Arcadia, where peace is all and the virgin/whore goddess reigns without force; it is the task of the sign to achieve this unplundered land within themselves. Submerged beneath the mundane interpretation of Virgo is a mysterious and timeless figure, a sacred profanity seeking expression in the modern world. Less Ave Maria, more Ave Maria Magdalene.
Feedback:
Anton, Gustav, Arnold - I haven't heard from those guys in a while.
Hildegaard of Bingen --> Suzanne I especially like... brings to mind Nina Simone's remarkable version of Suzanne...
this one is particularly beautiful. loved the Cohen to Cage bit (that John Cage song is brilliant!) and your transition into Patsy Cline is sublime. also loved track 8, which is the first time in quite a bit of AotM listening that I've heard an "Amen" at the end of a song. great work, and looking forward to the next one.
