Comment:

A completely random mix I decided to make this evening as I was going through a bunch of stray mp3s I'd downloaded. Like many random mix CDs I make, some of the songs are ones that have been on my mind or that I have been particularly enamored with lately, and others are ones I picked out going through my collection (in this case, iTunes folders), with choices based purely on mood. Oh, and the "extended mix" of "Straight Lines" was something I edited myself about a month ago, adding about a minute of instrumental passages onto the beginning of the song. ("Perfect Day" was just downloaded today after I discovered, much to my chagrin, that I still did not own it.)I find random mix CDs work best if I assemble them on the fly, real time, as if I'm DJ-ing. That way I get a good sense of flow and mood. I only made a few minor adjustments to the sequence here (and added one or two songs) before I burned.

A friend and I once discussed how a mix CD tends to be a better overall representation of one's taste if you don't automatically reach for all your heavy hitters. For instance, whenever I set out to make a mix, I usually have to strongly resist the temptation to just reach for mainstays like Talking Heads, Devo and Elvis Costello. While there are a few personal Hall of Famers here (TMBG, The Smiths, Sparks), most of these are artists that are woefully neglected by me or that I don't listen to that often.
The Jem track is one I'd been looking for for years. I first heard it in a restaurant when it came out. I asked around on message boards if anyone knew what it was and no one had a clue. I forgot about it, but heard it again this weekend in yet another restaurant, this time recording a bit of it on my phone so I could get the lyrics. A quick search on Google finally gave me the results I was looking for. So I guess you could say this mix is in partial celebration of that mystery being solved.
The title of this mix is from the Spoon track. Speaking of, I really need to pull "Kill The Moonlight" out again. I haven't listened to it in quite a while...probably because I literally played it a few times a week for about six months when it came out.

Interesting thought process, as is the mix. I really like "Kill The Moonlight" also.

That's pretty much exactly how I do my mixes, too. Try to go for newer, different stuff than my usual faves, and they almost always include gems that I heard in some unusual forum (i.e. a restaurant like you said) and finally tracked down. This one you've made is crazy in all the right ways. I like the new TMBG - it's still a little too normal for them (too many standard song structures and predictable rock tempos), but "Walls" is one of the better tracks and they never fail to please. Also excellent Tears for Fears, Sparks, Kenickie, and Lou Reed needless to say. Whenever you have the inkling to make another random mix, please share it again

really love the way that you have shared your thought process when putting your mixes together. seriously, I love that.As for the mix, looks like a solid contribution . . . Abba are still a great guilty pleasure of mine and remain the band of which I am most in awe when it comes to production techniques. Awesome stuff !

lots of songs i've been rocking recently as well. the jem song and album were both recently popularized due to their extensive use by the music director of grey's anatomy.

To natalyesaurus: I had no idea about that, as I don't watch that show.
