Comment:

Continuing on with songs from Rolling Stone's "Greatest 500 Songs of All Time" -- these are some of my favorite 80s classics. These are the songs I grew up to -- back when Michael Jackson was normal, you were cool if you liked U2 (I don't know -- are you still cool if you like U2???), and the greatest thrill was listening to Casey Kasem's countdowns every Sunday (now, happily, I get to relive those times on XM :) Anyway, yes, I can easily admit -- I love 80s music, although it didn't quite get the respect some of the other decades got from Rolling Stone . . . According to Rolling Stone's poll, the top song from the 80s was London Calling (ranked only as the 15th greatest song of all time), which is also one of my favorites and is included in this mix. Although MJ, Prince, and Madonna define the decade for me, I would have to say my favorite of these 80s classics is Free Fallin'. (As a side note, two of these "80s" classics technically were released in the 70s, although they sound enough like 80s music to me to be included here).

No, being a U2 fan is no longer credible. Their new music doesn't even appear on the supposedly "hip" alternative radio stations much anymore. But there's no arguing with "The Joshua Tree" as we all know. Good stuff all around here - Clash and Joy Division may pre-date the era but they do seem to belong more to it than the '70s

there's too much of a mix of era here-- it seems like joy division doesn't belong in the same record collection as U2, much less on the same mix CD.

Actually, Joy Division and U2 could both be considered 80s alternative (the XM 80s alt channel FRED plays both all the time). So I would guess a few people would have both in their collection. When I make a mix, flow is the most important thing to me, so if they were too different I wouldn't have put them both here (that's why, unfortunately Foreigner didn't make the cut :)
