Comment:
Okay ... second attempt. As with the first, this is my misguided attempt to have a 40-something dad whip up mix CDs for his 18-year-old daughter who's off to college. She really liked the last CD (Needles in a Haystack) but even though I thought I was picking lesser-known bands for her musical edification, I was informed that they were only lesser-known to me and were actually mainstream in the indie rock arena. So, I needed to go back to school as far as my own musical education went. As an avid Google Reader user, I figured subscribing to few music blogs might help me get back in touch with the current music scene. I quickly discovered that not only did the blogs report on music but usually included some links to MP3 files as well. Very cool!
The above mix is what I enjoyed most from the files I downloaded the first week I was subscribed. What a great way to find new artists and music genres! Of course there are some songs like Feist's "1234" that are played a million times a day on Apple ads but most are songs I'm hoping she's not already familiar with.
Just FYI for those interested, here's the 14 blogs I'm currently monitoring:
Aquarium Drunkard
Blogcritics Music
EAR FARM
Glorious Noise
gorillavsbear
i guess i'm floating
My Old Kentucky Blog
ninebullets
Nothing But Green Lights
Ryan's Smashing Life
stereogum
Twangville
who killed the mixtape?
You Ain't No Picasso
Feedback:
Nice work Dad. I think your daughter will again tell you that most of these artists are relatively well known, but definitely good stuff.
