Comment:

notes from the subject: Anthony and I met as a result of the Smiths, which is odd because I'm not their biggest fan, and he would be content watching Morrissey dance for days on end. This almost perfectly describes our relationship; we're like oil and vinegar in that we never quite mix but make a pretty damn good vinaigrette. Sappy things aside, Anthony has made me mixes since the day we met. The second thing out of his mouth (the first was asking me for my top five favorite bands) was, "Hey, can I make you a mix?" This evolved from the single disc "From Anthony, to Carly" to a series ("The Get Fresh Flow") that ushered in the pivotal point in our relationship: him getting up the courage to hit on me relentlessly through song. It took around a year for me to realize this was going on considering I'm the daft "best friends say i love you, don't they?" type. Now when I listen to the first couple TGFF mixes, the lovelorn lyrics hit me in the face, and I wonder how much more explicit he would've had to be for me to realize this earlier. Really, though, can you get more obvious than songs like "I Will" and "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You"? If I remember correctly, one of you mixers even predicted that it was meant for someone who was more than just a friend (whoever you were, you should be a psychic). Our entire relationship is based on the fact that I was completely oblivious to his wooing and he, subsequently, had to take little steps out of his comfort zone until he was practically titling his mixes "I Love You, Yes I Mean You." A little over a year ago we had a conversation that we consider the beginning of our romantic relationship, but really was just a sweet way of saying it was alright to love each other without the guise of an unnaturally close friendship. He still makes me mixes, obviously, and I haven't seen this one yet and won't get it for a little while because we are both terrible procrastinators. I think it's pretty obvious through his painstaking liner notes, track-listings, and "thank yous" that Anthony has an incredibly large heart, and maniacal love for music. Despite the fact that sometimes I think he loves records more than me (just kidding), I love everything that he does. He truly is a good person, the best friend, and most adorable boyfriend. It's been more than a year and a dozen or so mixes later, and we've still got a bunch more of both to go! I love you, Anthony

notes from the creator: this is my belated one year anniversary mix for my girlfriend, as evident from her thoughts above. i've worked on this for roughly two or three months now, & it literally took that long just to get a finalized list of songs that i felt meshed this well together. there's a bit of an alt.country twang to it that started out unintentional & grew more purposeful as i went on. this went through about a dozen incarnations before i finally got fed up enough with myself to buckle down for an entire weekend & finish it. it's late, yes (our anniversary is sept. 20), but better late than never, right? i think carly put the whole relationship angle better than i ever could, so i'll leave you with that. the epilogue in the final track refers to a recording of e.e. cummings reciting his poem "somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond" after about 30 seconds of silence at the end of the smiths track. huge thanks to doowad for getting a hold of the recording for me (told you i'd use it eventually!); another huge thanks to our man barrydali for the will johnson track. title from e.e. cummings.

I am so happy for you guys. "Love the theme and two of the Best songs in the world, I Will and I hope that I don't fall in love with you" was my comment on your "the get fresh flow, vol. 1". My comment for this mix is "Love it all" and "try listening to it together while reading ee cummings 'may i feel said he'".

Touching and I say that without a hint of sarcasm. Wish I could get Mrs. Frenchy to write some liner notes displaying such empathy for her mix maker!!! Many congrats you guys and may you have mamy many more anniversaires.

love this, mix and comment-wise. It's been fun to follow this from the Get Fresh Flow days. Love the Burritos, VU, Waits, Mad Fields, Lucinda, Neil, Bob, Neko and Beatles tunes. Nice to see comments from the recipient, nice to see these Romantic mixes work!

good lord, are you two trying to make everyone cry!? that's so.... beautiful. it sounds like you're a real lucky pair. great mix, Anthony. "that Smiths song is one of the most romantic ever recorded," is what I say. and don't worry, honey, it sounds like you're a real close second to those records. give it another year and I bet you're #1.

Much of your mix catalog, this one especially, contains well defined moods with character and simple elegance. To be privy to the personal stories behind them makes them poetic. Congratulations!

In this cynical age, any time someone intertwines the concepts of "extensive liner notes on a mix cd" and "earnest, mushy, love letters," it's hard not to think: Gee, this is an Onion article on some lame Area Man just waiting to be written. So it takes some skill to pull it off without setting yourself up for derision, yet the two of you miraculously hit it out of the park. Kudos to you both on the music & the anniversary.
