Comment:

There will be some who will shiver with fear when they see this selection but sometimes you want to celebrate the cheesiness of pop. Of course secretly I prefer Neutral Milk Hotel, Joy Division, Apples In Stereo, Blondie, XTC....................................to most of what is on offer here. Some explanation : the opening track is the theme to a children's TV series from the 70's called Black Beauty starring Stacy Dorning who was one of my first crushes....................................Lio was a Belgian teen star who gained enough credibility to have the Mael brothers write songs for her..........................................Arms Of Mary I doctored, inserting my first almost-girlfriend's name where Mary should have been...................................................It Takes Two To Tango sounds like a Roxy Music reject track that involved Sailor at the mixing desk..........................................................Laura Branigan RIP brings back memories of a Munich disco and two Australian girls in the summer of 1984...........................................Thereze Bazar of Dollar vied with that girl from the Thompson Twins for most hideous girl in pop award but despite this handicap managed to help steer the perfect plastic pop of Mirror Mirror into the top ten..................................................the Nolans were the prototype Corrs and it was a colleague at Readings Records in Clapham Junction that convinced me (she had red hair and freckles so I was easily convinced) that Attention To Me was disco genius...........................................Girl Talk are a distaff version of Wham (they are even on the same label) and consequently are pop excellence......................................................Luv are three Dutch girls who wake up one morning and find they have turned into Abba, people are shocked and Swedes shun them but Kafka rotates in his grave in musical ecstasy..........................................I had to include Lucky Stars for this lyric which endears me to it "listen hon, I know you're dumb, but that's OK, you don't have to look so glum", has me cackling with laughter every time I hear it.....................................Mr.Ocean did inflict many an aural outrage on innocent ears but Love Really Hurts Without You demands you sing along with it so forgive him his Caribbean Queens........................................................I loved watching the Partridge Family when I was a kid, no wonder I gripped on tight to the punk wave when it washed up in my ears..............................and I end with You're Moving Out Today for that would be the result if a lover or flatmate played this CD from start to finish.

wow wee, I would love to put this on the ole' turntable. Nolans, Wham, Boney M, Partridge Family and of course Laura Branigan [RIP, indeed] are already giving me shivers.... of pleasure. pretty sure "Le Banana Split" and "Barbie Girl" back-to-back would put me completely over the top, if you know what I mean. my favorite Billy Ocean song has always been "Get Outta' My Dreams (And Into My Car)."

I really like the Partridge Family track, generally think Gilbert is okay (although I don't know that track), and think that there are worse songs than that Wham! song. The others I know (tornadoZ's beloved Laura Branigan, Billy Ocean, and Carole Bayer Sager) I can't stomach, but willingly support your love of them. ;-) I did a guilty pleasures mix a couple of years ago, as well. I'll send you a link to it when I find it here.

Well, I thought you were 'cool'... and now it's been confirmed. There's nowt better than the 3 minute pop song, and you've got them in abundance. We've all got a mix like this inside us surely, after all none of us are born loving Joy Division & Can, are they? Favourites include Self Control, a track on one of the very first albums I owned 'The Hits Album' vol 1. Gilbert, Wham, Dollar.. and the poptastic closer. Very Excellent.

"Pack up your clothes away, your rubber hose away." I was always intrigued immensely by that line from the fantastic closing track here. Gilbert O' sullivan is a fantastic wordsmith (amongst the best ever in my book)Track 19 is a guilty pleasure of mine, oh I could go on and on, MotW for me this is.

Since I don't recognize any act on this mix save for Partridge Family, I suppose I'm not really a pophead. Personally, I don't care if any band is poppy unless it veers into teen bop a la Britney Spears, N*Sync, etc.
