Comment:

It's been a while since my last submission, but I'm glad to be back with a (mostly) bluegrass offering. It might help fill the void of "folk music with overdrive" here at AotM. Would I pique your curiosity if I told you that this mix includes:
- some great Scruggs style* banjo-playing on the 5-string, as well as some clawhammer style** for contrast; - traditional and progressive bluegrass styles;
- the "dream-team" of high lonesome vocals: Vince Gill and Del McCoury;
- the jazzy guitar picking of Tony Rice;
- the musings of an auctioneer on mules and whiskey;
- no less than four different Dobro players (including, of course, the ubiquitous Jerry Douglas [on track 8]);
- one band consisting of four young women (Uncle Earl);
- the wonderful twin-fiddling of B.J and Molly Cherryholmes, both still in their teens;
- two songs including a cello, and one song with drums ("hey, you can't do that in bluegrass");
- covers of songs by Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, and the White Stripes;
- lots of frolicking instrumentals;
- oh yeah, and an account of a murder.

* Scruggs style , also known as three-finger style, is the most common style of playing the banjo in bluegrass music.
It is named for Earl Scruggs, whose innovative approach and technical mastery of the instrument has influenced generations
of bluegrass banjoists ever since he was first recorded in 1946. Scruggs-style banjo is played with picks on the thumb,
index and middle fingers; the pinky and/or ring fingers are typically braced against the head of the instrument.
The strings are picked rapidly in repetitive sequences or rolls; the same string is not typically picked twice in succession.
Melody notes are interspersed among arpeggios, and musical phrases typically contain long series of staccato notes,
often played at very rapid tempos. The music is generally syncopated, and may have a subtle swing or shuffle feel,
especially on mid-tempo numbers. The result is lively, rapid music, which lends itself both as an accompaniment
to other instruments and as a solo. (from Wikipedia)

**Clawhammer is a highly rhythmic and common component of American old-time music. The principal difference
between clawhammer style and other finger picking styles is the picking direction. Traditional picking styles, including
those for folk, bluegrass, and classical guitar, consist of an up-picking motion by the fingers and a down-picking motion
by the thumb; this is also the technique used in the Scruggs style for the banjo. Clawhammer picking, by contrast, is primarily
a down-picking style. The hand assumes a claw-like shape and the strumming finger is kept fairly stiff, striking the strings
by the motion of the hand at the wrist and/or elbow, rather than a flicking motion by the finger. In its most common form on
the banjo, only the thumb and middle or index finger are used and the finger always downpicks, hitting the string with the back
of the fingernail or a pick. (from Wikipedia)

Well, no wonder that sendspace is at full capacity, with an offering like this - who wouldn't want to get their hands, err, ears on this one?! I haven't succeeded in doing so yet, but I fully intend to keep on trying.

Hey, you can't do that in bluegrass! Nonetheless, a beauty through & through! Didn't want to mouth off about this until I had actually listened to it once, & now that I have I can tell you I'll be playing it for friends, & heading over to Down Home Music to load up on those Infamous Stringdusters, Chris Thile, & Duhks, who are all new to me. Thanks for the introduction!
(P.S. not to mention the pleasure of bumping into my best friends Adrienne, Abigail, & Uncle Earl. Fun for all!)
