Comment:
This mix pays homage to the music with which I fell in love in 2007. It's going out as a Christmas present for my friends.1. The first track, "Dear Mr. Man" by Prince, features spoken words by Cornell West, to whose works I was first introduced this past semester.
2. "Club Foot" fills me with energy, and the hook is dam' catchy.
3. Hallelujah the Hills' self-titled track has been running through my head all year. "We were born in Burma..."
4. "D.A.N.C.E." will haunt your dreams. Don't say I didn't warn you.
5. "Stuck in the Middle with You" might as well be my theme song this year.
6. "Tonight I Have to Leave It" is a song for romantic realists (realist romantics?) like myself.
7. I first heard the Willie Nelson track on WRIR while I was driving my car. I nearly wrecked. I adore this song.
8. I saw the Detroit Cobras in concert this year, accidentally. I didn't realize who they were until they busted out with "As Long As I Have You." Their guitarist rawks.
9. Good advice from Simple Kid: "All this pressure just makes you strong/ When yer kicked down, Give a lil' King Kong."
10. I don't know why Semisonic dorked out and abbreviated "Fascinating New Thing" to "F.N.T." Maybe abbreviations were cool then. Who knows. But the track is fun, and makes me happy. It goes out to all my friends.
11. Ah, Sarah Blasko: she's so angsty that she pushes through to the other side and makes feeling like a moody teenager thrilling again.
12. This Eva Cassidy track makes me weepy. God, that woman could sing. This love song makes other love songs look like they're not trying.
13. Neko Case is my hero, not least because she makes this (my fav. gospel song) sound like an Irish bar song.
14. Janis Ian, backed by Dolly Parton: I come thisclose to jumping in my car and driving to the mountains whenever I listen to this track.
15. A shout-out for Joan Baez! For all of us with friends/loved ones scattered all over the world (you know who you are).
16. The Brett Dennen track is another instance of me hearing a song on WRIR and nearly wrecking my car -- in this case, driving home late at night in the fog. I should probably not listen to that station in the car anymore.
17. I'm not sure but I think I may want to be Nina Nastasia when I grow up. And the drums drums drums drums.
18. Joan as Police Woman's "The Ride" is one smooth track. It almost sounds like something that would be playing on the easy listening station my parents' alarm clock was set to in my childhood. But then her voice swoops up and the song goes places...
19. Richard Hawley understands love.
20. And LCD Soundsystem understands life. This track hurts me. I can't stop listening to it. This is actually a remix of the original, which is much longer and for which I didn't have room on this mix. But it's such a glorious paean to love and bitterness and growth and creativity that I should probably have left something else out to make room. Gah.
Feedback:

Liking Tonight I Have to Leave It, As Long As I Have You and I'm On Nights a lot.
I know I am not usual, but I hope I am suspicious, because this looks most excellent!
